I was doing some free association and then made this picture that I thought was amusing. My wife thought it was in support of Bill Cosby. I told her she doesn't understand me at all.

Scripting Tutorials / Simple Timer Tutorial
« on: January 28, 2014, 07:54:06 AM »
Someone was recently asking about waits, so I wrote out a really quick tutorial on timers:

Here is a basic timer routine that sits in a series of quarter second wait for ten seconds:

Code: Select All | Copy To Clipboard

Code: [Select]
Set %Timer #SCNT + 10

While %Timer > #SCNT
     {
     Wait 5
     }
Halt

This timer is limited because the script won't do anything while it is waiting for the timer to expire.

This is a routine that lets you do other stuff until a timer expires every ten seconds, does whatever the timer is controlling, resets the timer, and keeps rolling on the "other stuff"

Code: Select All | Copy To Clipboard
Code: [Select]
Set %Timer #SCNT + 10
Repeat
   {
   ; Do other stuff
   If %Timer < #SCNT
      GoSub Timed_Activity
Wait 1     ; if you don't have a wait in a loop it eats a lot of processor power.
   }
Until #Charghost = Yes
Halt

Sub Timed_Activity
; Do whatever it is you are timing
Set %Timer #SCNT + 10
Return

UO Reference Information / Siege Unravel Stats
« on: January 14, 2014, 04:58:30 AM »
I am pulling together some information on Siege specifics and am not finding a place to put it so I am going to start here.

With the additional arms lore bonus, unraveling special wood weapons has a slightly better yield.

Unraveling at QF with a gargoyle:

Exceptional Oak Bow: 5 MR
Exceptional Ash/Yew/Frostwood: 3 MR
Exceptional Bloodwood Bow: 1-2 EE

6 non-exceptional bloodwood bows: 8 EE (1.3 per)
54 exceptional bloodwood bows: 67 EE (1.24 per)

I ran a larger sample and my result seemed to trend toward one essence per 4.4 bloodwood boards.

All bloodwood bows unraveled to EE at the QF. Rate of return for non-exceptional is likely an anomaly and I would guess that rate of return variance is based on durability as we have seen in other testing. Conversion rate appears to be approximately one enchanted essence per 5.5 bloodwood boards using bows. Since exceptional doesn't matter, the rate of return should be better making bokutos.

Off Topic / Registry Fix
« on: December 16, 2013, 03:20:56 PM »
My computer seems to be gradually failing. Random crashes while cutting and pasting and that sort of thing. I think it stems from some overheats that may have damaged some RAM. My CPU fan failed and I don't know how long it ran like that.

I was thinking I ought to try a registry repair and wonder if anyone thinks that is a reasonable thing to do, or has other ideas.

Off Topic / Advice for Repairing My Ailing Desktop
« on: May 28, 2013, 07:28:14 PM »
The custom built I put together a couple of years ago failed last week and I don't have a ton of confidence that the guy working on it has it figured out. The system started locking up and crashing about a week ago seemingly unrelated to any new hardware or software install. It will boot and run a browser, but if I run something that attempts to install software it locks up -- despite the fact that diagnostic on the drive is clean.

Three months ago the cpu cooler started to make noise as its fan died, so I replaced It. Cpu checks out fine. I ran a couple of diagnostics, but didn't see a problem, so I took it in. Repair guy thinks that the power source I used was not getting enough air and may have been surging -- which apparently is a good argument for installing them with the fan facing up. I figured it ought to face the vent on the bottom, but in hindsight that was not so smart. Anyway, he can't isolate the problem either. First he replaced the power source. Didn't fix the problem, but I can see that as a logical first step if it was the initial source of the problem, but not the crashes that might make sense. Next he replaced the hard drive and reinstalled W7. System checks out clean until I tried updating windows and now it's unstable again. Not sure why he didn't do that before he brought it back. My guess is that the board is shot, but I can't get the thing to download a diagnostic to check.

Any thoughts?

If I need a board any thoughts on what would be the right buy that is compatible with the rest of the pieces I already have? System specs pulled from BurnIn below. If you see an obvious upgrade opportunity let me know.

Thanks for your time!

Scripting Chat / Looking for a tutorial on creating data files
« on: November 19, 2012, 04:35:10 PM »
I am interested in learning how to create retrievable data files for things like: setting a series of waypoints, creating a list of people who are mean to me, saving a bunch of tarket clicks -- you get the idea. If someone really smart like (TM, Cerv, EN, Crome...) has 20 minutes to write up a basic, comprehensive tutorial on creating a sub that will write a retriveable file and (also important) a sub for retrieving the data, that would be super cool.

Off Topic / Where should I start?
« on: October 23, 2012, 07:20:32 AM »
I am not a programmer, but I have been working in the software development space for the last year.  I am interested in devoting some of my "free reading" time to developing my technical skills. I took classes in Basic, Fortran and Pascal 20 years ago, but that is the extent of my formal training. I think I would like to start learning about the coding languages we are using for the project I am working on and wonder if anyone can recommend some reading.

My guess is that I can handle either 50,000 foot overview/theory material or manual type material if its not so dry as to be unreadable. The areas I want to learn about include:

Java script
Jnode
JQuery
SQL
Server structure/architecture
Cloud architecture
Drupal

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks!

The UVerse wireless modem we have in our house gives lousy, inconsistent coverage for pretty much any device outside of the room its in. I want to come up with a comprehensive solution for wireless in our home. Can people give me their thoughts on the best way to do this?

Thanks!

Crafting / Runic Hammer Consolidator
« on: September 01, 2012, 11:07:41 AM »
This is a relatively simple script I put together to save on storage space by consolidating low end runic hammers. The script will work through a container and consolidate all of the dull copper and shadow hammers. It will ignore any other items in the container. If there is an odd number of either hammer type, the extra hammer goes back in the source container. I may update the script to deal with other hammers and non-hammer runics if there is interest.

Enjoy...

Games & Game Systems / Infinity Blade
« on: February 09, 2012, 10:59:27 AM »
So I realize that most folks on this site don't care for iPhones - but I admit to having a couple of them. My wife wanted and comandered the plan. My son recently downloaded Infinity Blade and it is a really impressive game for your phone. I am pretty blown away by the graphics, sophistication of play. I think I read the book a while back and realized it while watching him come back to life.

I am sure they can put it on Android if its not already out for that OS. I think its well worth the $6.

UO Reference Information / New BODing - Bribery, Wait times, etc.
« on: February 02, 2012, 11:35:47 AM »
I am going to put together some research on the new BODing rules and will maintain this thread on the changes. The main topic, I believe, is how/whether we can use bribing to get better BODs. I am going to put in some additional information about the changes as I work through it.  If you would like to add to this thread, please feel free to respond, and your suggestions will be incorporated into the main post.

Timing Changes

The delay between getting BODs is no longer skill dependant, it is six hours, regardless. There is, however, a buffer of up to three bods that you can pick up all at once. Turning in a completed bod still allows you to get a new bod immediately and doesn't reduce your buffer.

Bribery

Looks like it has a lot of potential to increase access to high end hammers. I think it is going to require some testing to see what can be done to get there.  First some information about how it works.

To initiate a bribe, there is a dropdown from the context menu on an NPC blacksmith. It says bribe. When you select it, you get the message:

"So you want to do a little business under the table? Target a bulk order deed to show to the shopkeeper."
You get a target cursor with this message. Applying the cursor to a BOD gives the following message:

"I shouldn't have too much trouble finding a better replacement for that bulk order." "If you help me out, I'll help you out. I can replace that bulk order with a better one, but its gonna cost you XXXXX gold coin. Payment is  due immediately. Just hand me the oder and I'll pull the old switcheroo."

Handing the deed over to the NPC withdraws the amount from your bank and gives you a new deed with the following message:

"You'll find this one much more to your liking. It's been a pleasure, and I look forward to you greasing my palm again very soon. XXXXX gold has been withdrawn from your bank box."

My initial thoughts on Bribery:

Bribery looks to be a signficant gold sink, as its not all that cheap to upgrade an sbod, and lbods are a multiple of the included peices. In addition, the threshold before an NPC stops upgrading bods is pretty low. The most I have gotten from one NPC so far is four upgrades. Based on this, I think that it makes sense to identify the best upgrade opportunities and focus on those. Based on the value of the rewards, and the cost involved, I am focusing on maximizing the number of valorite hammers I can get out of my bods, and on upgrading chain where it makes sense. Thus far, my list of upgrades that look to be worth it below. I will add to this as I finish looking over the charts.

One Upgrade to Valorite Hammer:

Deed                              Previous Reward
PL_Small_E_15_VA              Ver Hammer
PL_Small_E_20_VE              Ver Hammer
PL_Small_N_20_VA              +30 ASH (this is the best ROI opportunity I see)

Two Upgrades to Valorite Hammer:

Deed                              Previous Reward
PL_Small_E_10_VA              Ver Hammer  (I may not upgrade these)
PL_Small_E_15_VE              +60 ASH (I may not upgrade these)
PL_Small_N_15_VA              Gold Hammer
PL_Small_N_20_VE              Gold Hammer

Chain BODs Probably Worth Upgrading

Deed                     Previous Reward              New Reward             #Upgrades
CH_Small_E_15_VE    +30 ASH                         Agg Hammer              1
CH_Small_E_20_AG    +30 ASH                         Agg Hammer              1
CH_Small_E_20_GO    Gold Hammer                  +60 ASH                    1
CH_Small_N_20_BR    Bronze Hammer               +20 Skill Scroll           1
CH_Small_N_15_VA    +15 ASH                         +20 Skill/Agg Hmr      1
CH_Small_N_20_VE    +15 ASH                          Agg Hammer              1

Bribery Test Results:

Single Upgrade from Ver Hammer Set to Val Hammer Set:

15 exc Ver Plate Legs 54,700gp replaced with 20 Ver Plate Legs
15 exc Ver Plate Legs 36,400gp replaced with 20 Ver Plate Legs
15 exc Ver Plate Legs 38,400gp replaced with 20 Ver Plate Legs
15 exc Ver Plate Legs 40,400gp replaced with 20 Ver Plate Legs
15 exc Ver Plate Legs 41,400gp replaced with 20 Ver Plate Legs
20EVerTunic 64,000
20EVerTunic 65,900
20EVerTunic 38,700 (Switched locations and price dropped a bunch)
20EVerTunic 40,700
20EVerTunic 39,200
20EVerTunic 41,200
20EVerGloves 36,800
20EVerGloves 33,300
20EVerGloves 35,300
20EVerGorget 37,200

Single Upgrade From Ver Hammer to Val Hammer Average per piece: 42,907

Current Projection for turning a Ver Hammer set of deeds into a Val Hammer set of deeds (Smalls only): 257,440
Upgrading the LBOD would approximately double that cost.
While I expect the price of hammers to come down, the typical verite hammer sells for around 8M, while the typical valorite hammer sells for around 15M and up. A single upgrade appears to be worth doing. The double upgrades are likely to double the cost, based on my intial examination and also appear to be worth doing as well.

Additional Testing Not Yet Considered Above:

10 exc Ver Plate Legs 32,400gp replaced with 15 Ver Plate Legs   Comment Deed is still a ver hammer deed.
15 exc DC ring gloves 15,800 gp replaced with 15 exc B ring gloves  Comment Deed jumped 2 ore grades
20EVerTunic 60,900
20EVerTunic 66,800
20EVergorget 38,300
20EVergloves 40,300
20EVergorget 42,300
20EVerTunic 21,200
20EVerLegs 21,200
20EVerLegs 41,400
20EVerTunic 43,400
