UO Reference Information / Reforge Items - Using Runics On Steroids?
« on: February 02, 2012, 10:53:05 AM »
I have started to do a bit of testing on using the new runic system and thought we ought to start a thread to discuss how it works.  If you find some information and would like to add it to this reference page, please feel free and I will incorporate it into the top post:

Powerful Re-Forging Item can still be repaired and powdered. Unclear what the limits of attributes are.
Structural Re-Forging Item cannot be repaired. Durability appears to be reset to 135 regardless of what it was.
Fortified Re-Forging Item cannot be repaired. Durability appears to be reset to 200 regardless of what it was. requires structural to be selected?
Fundamental Re-Forging Item cannot be repaired. Appears to give a boost to attributes over Powerful.
Integral Re-Forging Item cannot be repaired. Appears to give a significant boost to attributes over Powerful.
Grand Artifice I can't tell for sure what any of these next four do except eat charges. I suspect that they apply attributes in a pattern based on the name. Not all names are available in all cases. I did some tests with Soul Glaves and could not unlock what appear to be the slayer names with any combination. Hopefully we can develop some information about these.

But the #1 innappropriate kids response to homework prize went to my six year old. I posted the picture on FB, but it should be private. Someone who commented on it must have a public profile. Something to keep in mind when posting things on FB.

Off Topic / Question: Server Farm vs. Cloud Solution
« on: October 13, 2011, 06:05:42 PM »
I am developing a hosted subscription based software service and will have a database set up for each client.  I need the service to be extremely reliable and very secure.  My developer is suggesting we use Rack Space cloud solution as a scaleable solution and believes that it will be both secure and reliable.  My understanding is that you essentially set up virtual machines on the vendor's servers to run your systems.

http://www.rackspace.com/

My questions are:

Does anyone have experience with a cloud based third party vendor solution like this?

Does anyone have insight into the relative benefits/drawbacks of using a vendor like Rack Space as opposed to building and maintaining my own servers?

Is Rack Space the right provider if I go this route?

Am I giving up anything in reliability/ security if I go this route? If so, what exactly...

Thanks for your consideration!!!

Off Topic / Database Platform Preference
« on: September 07, 2011, 08:04:20 AM »
I am in the process of having a development project scoped and will have to decide what database my system will use.  The portal/database will have to accept data input from a variety of sources as my clients will be uploading information from different platforms.  I anticipate that my database managment system will need to be able to effectively translate information coming from Oracle, Linux and SQL.  Developing a process that does this well will be an important part of the project.

I wonder if anyone can express a preference for what my database should be built in.

I also wonder if anyone can give me some questions that I ought to be asking developers to screen the hacks from the pros.  I can't afford a false start with the wrong developer.

Thanks!

Off Topic / Building a new system for my assistant: Feedback wanted
« on: July 19, 2011, 08:01:20 AM »
I am looking to build a desktop system for my assistant, her computer is giving her some trouble.  I want something relatively cheap and reliable.  She will be primarily doing correspondence, working on some spreadsheets, marketing material and some web development.  The system doesn't need to be a game ready computer.  If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it.  I would like to get it done for around $400.

I was looking at this kit from Tiger:

Off Topic / Riding Mower
« on: June 30, 2011, 05:33:15 AM »
So I am looking at buying a riding mower and I think I have decided on getting a Deere D110. Any naysayers? Any Deere haters?

http://www.deere.com/en_US/ProductCatalog/HO/servlet/com.deere.u90785.cce.productcatalog.view.servlets.ProdCatProduct?pNbr=BG20541&tM=HO

Yes, I plan to look EXACTLY like the tool riding that mower when I get mine. I want a baseball cap too though.

Its been 20+ years since I had a lawn I had to mow, so I have some questions.

1. To Mulch or Not to Mulch:

I am seeing a lot of chatter about mulching blades.  Do I care?  What happened to dumping the clippings in a big pile in my backyard?  I was thinking that if I use the regular blade and get a bagger attachment I can use it to pick up leaves in the Fall.

2. Plow, Thrower, or my Back?\

I have a circle drive and if I get more than a couple of inches of snow I am going to wish I was paying someone to make it all go away.  As an alternative I could get an attachment for this lawn tractor. They have a snow blower and a plow.  Has anyone ever used something like this on a riding mower?  is it worth it?

Any feedback related to these questions, wise-cracks or othwerwise is welcome.

Thanks!

Scripting Chat / Execution Issues?
« on: June 01, 2011, 05:32:59 AM »
I have been working on a simple rail miner script and ran into some issues that I don't fully understand in the last day or so.  I have been running it for a few weeks without a hitch and yesterday it started having issues.  I didn't edit any of the code, it just started screwing up spontaneously.

Things I have noticed:

In a series where it is supposed to be moving items from a Findindex it can't pick some of them up.

While mining, it will give me the message for using a shovel three times and then there is a delay before the messages that indicate the targets were successful.  Normally these would immediately follow a successful target.

The script seems to be simply missing some commands.  I have it set up to mount my fire beetle when it engages a creature, and then dismount to continue mining.  It doesn't do either consistently anymore.

Everything I am seeing looks like the effects of really bad lag, but I am not lagging when I shut the script down and try doing the same things manually.  I am also running other clients on the same shard, in the same location, and I don't lag scripting or not.

I slowed the execution speed down and it still acts as though it is lagging, missing commands and such.

Anyone have any ideas what might be causing these issues?

Script Snippets / Backpack Inventory
« on: May 26, 2011, 08:36:27 AM »
I have a series of crafting scripts that have a history of making the wrong item on occasion, derailing the script.  I think this is a product of trying to optimize speed.  This also caused issues clearing items out of the backpack since the items that were getting made were pretty random.  For several months I have been trying to come up with a solution that will allow me to maintain speed and efficiency, but detect the random items to tell me when to reset the process.  A secondary concern is getting the random stuff out of the backpack.

I finally came up with a solution today that involves taking an inventory of IDs of the items in the backpack at the start of the script and capturing them in a variable.  I am using it as a check against items I make to confirm correct make, and to keep from throwing things away.  It's pretty simple, but I figured I would share since it took me so long to figure it out.

Code: [Select]
Finditem * C_ , #BackpackID
Set %BackpackItemString BackpackContents:
For #Findindex 1 #FindCnt
    {
    Set %BackpackItemString %BackpackItemString , #FindID
    Set %BackpackItemString %BackpackItemString , _
    }

The second line inserts an underscore between IDs to avoid the extremely unlikely occurrence of an ID getting duplicated with parts of other IDs.
