Title: Halo 3 and microphone
Post by: Cerveza on July 06, 2009, 05:27:02 PM
Ok, so we got an Xbox 360 Elite, and an additional controller + Headset...

We do NOT have live or the adapter yet.

How do we use the mic? We have them plugged in, and we can see each other key mics, but absolutely no audio in the headphone speaker.

This sucks. Apparently every Xbox 360 owner on the planet has Live.

I spent an hour with "support" trying to get this to work. Their troubleshooting procedures ask that I record a message... without Live you can't even create a message you twits!

They have NO idea whether or not a headset will work without Live...

I hate Microsoft, always have... This just shows me my hatred is justified... the last thing he suggested was replacing the headsets - yes plural, we have two.

I told him we'll try them on someone elses system to ensure they work before we go sending them off to be replaced.

Anyone know a good xbox 360 or halo forum I could post in?

Not offhand.  You'll have to search for one and hopefully you'll find someone that's greater than 12 that's as helpful as we are here..... ;)

Well you dont need a headset if your not online so i could see why they would tell you to do that

True. The only game I've played so far that requires a headset (not online) is End War. I'm sure the headsets work fine. If you haven't considered it I'd definitely get Xbox Live. Alot of games are way more fun multiplayer.... Games like Halo, Call of Duty, Rainbow Six, etc I always play online more than I do the single player missions.

if you setup a silver xbox live account(just xbox live account u cant play online games with it since no game time is on the account) you can join friends in partys and chat so you could test that way also

So the headset works ONLY with Live?

We will be getting the wireless adapter, and we have our silver account. We'll probably be getting our Gold as well.

So if that a known fact, why don't the guys at support know about it?

Ok, I see my post begging you to buy the PS3 was a lil too late.

And again, I'm LOL-ing at xbox 'tech support' not telling you that the headsets are absolutely worthless without live.

Let me also share something else with you that's going to piss you off cuz I learned it the hard way.

You and your son with both need seperate xbox live accounts if you both want to play online at the same time, and talk to one another thru the headsets.

Now ain't that a bish?!

Hopefully you have all your packaging, and can take the thing back.  Cuz the more I played, the more I regretted not going with the PS3.

Most games (I'm thinking shooters) you CAN both play on the same Live account. You just sign in as a guest and you'll play split screen. However only the person logged into the Live account can use a headset. I have friends who own a 360 and PS3. They all play the 360 way more than the PS3 all pretty much just use the PS3 for blue ray. Sometimes they'll play a game that isn't available on 360 (Metal Gear, Resistance).
