Title: Continue getting error when starting Steam.
Post by: tandj99 on August 06, 2017, 06:08:17 AM
Get the following File Error

  "Failed to open file C:\Program Files (x86)\Electronic Arts\Ultima Online Classic\soundLegacyMUL.uop: Error 0."

I have been getting this error since that last uo patch. I have uninstalled and reinstalled UO twice, tried to use the last working client to open steam. Both did not work.

If you start the client without Steam, are you getting the error.

Usually when i get those type of errors, it is because I didn't run the program as an administrator.

If I go in and double click the client.exe file it works. If I open it with uo assist it works. But if I try and open any additional clients once I have one open it gives me the same error. Right now the only way I can open a second client is by using easyuo and selecting new client.

I made sure to confirm that I am running the exe as admin as well.

I assume your login settings on steam are correct?
Did you check to see if the client files are pathed correctly on client and support files (do not use the auto)

I had the same error.  It just means that you ran out of virtual memory.  UOSteam wants to occupy the first 2 GB of virtual memory on its own and if something else is already there like startup programs or background tasks it will fail.  The sound file is fairly large as well.  Since the patch, that error is the same as a virtual memory error.  I ran the patch mentioned earlier in this thread and I can run as many UOSteam clients as I want.

Not sure but may be you need to put the file in the proper folder.

Make sure you are running the patch on the UOSteam.exe file and not the short cut.  Make sure it is an application file that you are running the patch on.

I've got the same virtual memory error using UOA. 1 computer reboot and I was able to get in.

With the amount of bugs this latest patch has brought, I am confident it's an issue with their patch and not on the player side.

This could be that the pathway from your UO save in the client section of UOSteam is not connected to the location of your save. If you are using a secondary drive you will have to set it up to follow the path of your current saved location client. for example if you originally saved it in D:/ UO you will have to path it to your D drive. When opening UOSteam check the client folder and Client pathways connect to your installation.

It's the way that UOSteam was written, very poorly.  As I stated before it wants to be in the first 2 GB of Virtual Memory.  I used the patch and that helps, but Windows 10 has a very bad way of cleaning up memory used and re-allocating it.  I have had to reboot my system and make sure that UOSteam is one of the first things I initiate right after the re-boot.  I load up 3 Clients thru UOSteam as I have 3 accounts and I set the other 2 aside if I am not going to use them.  I also look into what background tasks I was running and removed some of them such as iTunes and Apple Support (and some other unknown useless ones that came with the machine).  I am trying to get rid of Cortana...I don't want her on my PC!

my friend do i have something amazing for you.

The reasoning behind such read access memory issues from windows 10 is the hidden spyware and data grabbing the system has. Microsoft truly devoured the concept of butting out of our buisness.
https://www.safer-networking.org/spybot-anti-beacon/
do yourself the biggest favor and download this anti beacon to remove networking flaws and memory dumping from your windows 10 system. You will be happy you did. It is so hard for a windows 10 user to run uo or anything without the outside source of interference from microsoft data collection. Horribly system. This anti beacon will clean out and refuse your network of overworking for the company.
here is a video explaining the situation from a x microsoft employee. He states microsoft is destroying your computer and for money grubbing reasons.

the "out of memory error" isn't my problem though.

This is something different that it is sayin that it failed to open the soundlegacyMUL.uop file. I have tried to delete the program and reinstall a fresh download. (no luck) also had friend send me a copy of his working files. (no luck) I have deleted the file out of my uo folder and had the client repair it upon restart of the client. (still no luck)

I have posted on a couple of different places and no response on there either of a fix. :(

You definitely have too many background tasks running on your CPU.  For instance, quicktime, apple support, iphone handler, etc.

You can find out what background tasks are running by hitting ctrl-alt-delete on your computer, going to task manager and then looking at how many background tasks are running.  I disabled some because initially, I was running 65 background tasks, which all run and reside in virtual memory.

Is there a way to tell what I need and what I don't need to have running in the background?

ok it says I had like 79 background processes running on startup. will look into which ones I actually need to be running and not.

Go to the actual tab that says start-up and disable any programs that are not important. Mainly it will be things like updaters and programs that you only need open if you want to use it. The things that need to stay enabled are things like virus protection, microsoft windows programs, intel/amd processor things. If you are not sure, do a google search for it. (do I need "XXXXXX" to run on startup)

tbh, i think people should give a try to Razor Enhanced.
The built-in script engine is very nice and not that hard to be familiar with.
There's a lot of features and updates like change UO resolutions...
