Interesting. I know there are alot of things you can do in the enhanced client that aren't possible in the 2d client. The idea of porting them over on the 2d client is quite interesting and something I never really thought of. Assuming that the check for it is client side then I don't see why someone couldn't find that gap and make the change...

I love to overclock but like Mass said make sure you are 100% familiar with everything and I mean everything that your changing. Know what it causes and why you are making the change. Also be sure to really understand the limits of your hardware.

I would recommend stress testing your CPU as it sounds like you might have been lucky enough to damage your CPU with those extremely high temps. Download Prime95, it is a CPU stress testing software that will load out all of your cores at 100% running calculations. Do not have anything else open while this is happening.
I didn't read what your configuration was in particular so I am assuming your not overclocking thus this stress test should comfortably run without failure. If one of the cores throws an error then you have found your problem.

My company as gone to a PTO (paid time off) policy so we have one big pool of vacation hours. Makes it way easier than determining X sick days and X vacation days.
