EC Client starts then closes....

Okay I'm going nuts after spending most of the day trying to get the EC Client to load.

I think I got some kind of virus a day or two ago. I've probably had it awhile. Damn ICQ and Porn! No more ICQ for me...every 2 mins you get SunnyGirl or some russian wanting to add you to their list. Bastards. Your better off just paying for the porn because the cost of to repair the computer is going to be more in the long run.

Yesterday my computer started slowing down and freezing up it would make a click clock..click clock sound. So I hit the on/off button and the PC rebooted which took a good 30 minutes.

Everything seems fine except I cannot get the EC Client to boot. I run the patcher...hit play and the game window attempts to open then immediately closes.

I've run as Admin, downloaded the latest Direct X drivers, downloaded the latest Nvidia Drivers. Downloaded AVG virus scan. Verified Windows Firewall is not blocking EC Client.

So I'm going nuts and bummed I can't play UO. Not sure what my options are at this point since I've tried everything after googling problems all day.

Any computer Geniuses/Guru's have any idea what I might try or what could be going on?

One the one hand I'm starting school in the summer and probably should be putting UO down and get my nose in the books. But as you all know we need our crack plus UO keeps me out of trouble and keeps me from spending money.

The only good thing is I can still run the 2D Client but I just can't play the game in that client. So I can script but I can't adventure.

I had trouble downloading patching the client in 2D as well. C2 had to send me the client!

I really dont' have any spending money to buy a new operating system, buy a new PC or get it repaired. If worst come to worst that's what I'll have to do but afterall I'm a starving student.

Seems like it would be something simple but I can't for the life of me figure it out. Everything else is working fine. 2d Client, Email, Internet etc.

Anyways...if anyone has an idea of what might be going on I'd love to hear your thoughts/suggestions.

Thanks TM I'll give it a whirl. Is that a free version or $25? I also downloaded AVG as you suggested in another thread. Doesn't seem to be bogging down my computer at all.

These damn Virus programs thing are a big extortion racket as far as I'm concerned. I've always had trouble with Norton, Trend Micro, and McCafee.

Allways run malware bytes (the free version!) and ccleaner to remove the crap and fix any registery errors

Okay I've downloaded CCleaner and Malwarebytes. Ran em' both.

Something wiped my facebook messages. Was that one of these programs?

Now I've tried to run the EC Client in VM and safemode and I get the message:

"Could not create hardware renderer. Click OK to try software emulation. Please note this will seriously degrade performance"

Not sure what the hell this means..googled it an not alot came up.

My roommate has a Win 7 Home Premium 64 Bit disk and I'm thinking about wiping all my stuff and starting over but not sure exactly how to go about it.

I'd like a clean start per se...

I also have a 2nd computer that I'm thinking about buying a new harddrive for.

How hard is it to install a new hard drive? Do I have to format the disk or can I just pop in Win 7 Disk and install it?

Yeah lots of questions but I'm not too savvy on this stuff.

Any feedback will be appreciated.

I downloaded the latest Nvidia drivers...I didn't uninstall first. Just downloaded the latest....

I guess I could try uninstalling everything and reinstalling on the drivers.

What have I got to lose!

I've tried to restore to a previous point but that didn't work.

I'm thinking I need wipe clean and re-install an OS.

That'll entail another million questions though.

Didn't reinstall since running the cleaner. I'll do it now. 

I'm willing to try everything once.

No other changes I can think of....

The issue I was having was with the PC acting sluggish and freezing up on me. The HD was making weird back and forth noises almost like a tick tock.

So something was going on. I ended up turning the off PC without shutting down it took 30 mins for the PC to boot back up desktop.

Currently with AVG, Malewarebytes and CCCleaner everything seems to be running super smooth with the exception of the EC Client being able to load properly.

Since I've had a bunch of time I manage to hook up hooked my SATA drive from my other computer that was having problems and I was able to transfer all my music, photos and documents onto my current computer.  I'm very happy I was able to recover that data because I thought it was lost. Then I was able to wipe the old HD Clean with CCLeaner. I'm going attempt to use that Hardrive to get my other computer back up and running. I'll probably have some more questions...  pertaining to installing a Harddrive.....Am I in the right forum?


I might actually learn something...

I'd really like to be able to piece a computer together from scratch and be able to install/format the operating system. Computers is the reason I'm going back to school in a couple of weeks.

Back to the Topic though I just ran CCleaner again and I'm now reinstalling and patching the EC Client as Gimlet suggested. We'll see what happens...

Could it just be wear and tear and that my harddrive is going bad?

I'm going to try and set up my 2nd computer and I'll be having a load more questions. I'll start a thread over in the appropriate forum for that though.
