Title: Ok, so I'm basing my new system on Windows 7 - pray for me...
Post by: TrailMyx on February 10, 2009, 09:14:52 PM
Yes, it's amazing, but I'm taking a jump of faith....

I've been playing with the beta for the past couple of weeks and so far I like it.  I am running 64bit Ultimate Beta.

The beta is worth messing with though I haven't jumped into using on my everyday computer simply because there is some driver bugginess still that is out there.  As for a release candidate many of the rumors flying around is we could see it as early as late spring.

It's ok so far.  Part of my frustration with it is my ongoing issues with Vista itself.  However, the level of frustration is much less than when I was trying to use Vista.

One strange thing in 7 and SUO is that if you maximize the window, the tabs view doesn't move.  It works OK in 2000, 2003 and XP.  heh.

It also works fine in Vista as well so there must be something funky with the Beta that changed the way it is being handled.

I have to say that overall, I kinda like Win7.  The warning box spamming is much less than Vista.  Still getting used to where they've hidden basic functions, but overall it's OK.  I'm liking my F10 experience more and find myself spending more time in my Linux partition than I do in the Windows one.  But right now the Win7 is the only one that runs WoW smoothly.  I get crashes in Linux so far with my kernel/video driver/Wine combination.

Ya, they are taking their sweet time releasing it.  EA should take a page from this when it comes to UO.

Anyhow, Win7 isn't a huge leap from Vista technology-wise.  So it's a bit easier this time.  The WinXP->Vista jump was pretty radical.

I never even installed vista into my system.. I took one look at it, and said.. wow this is really gay looking.

just vlited/installed Windows 7 RTM x86 (Retail Ultimate), will be upgrading my Vista SP1 x64 soon.
I like it so far, but haven't used it too much.  I would stick with XP forever if I could, but on newer hardware it's time to move on.
I wonder if Windows 7 x64 will let you permanently disable driver signing, Vista doesn't.  Vista's super nazi kernel protection really bugs the hell outta me too.  It's like gun control, only the criminals gain access to the kernel while legitimate users are blocked.

Ya, I remember the first time I spent 30 minutes in Vista, I realized I was grasping the laptop I had with thoughts of hurling it through a window.  (same feeling when I use the SA client.. lol.)

But I just love the fact that I can just plug things in and have them work.  I plug in my Creative Labs Zen music player or my Windows Mobile phone, and they are correctly identified and drivers are automatically loaded.  I can't get that to happen with XP or 2003.  Also the bootup time and shutdown time are pretty darn quick.  Faster than my Win2003 partition.  I still have to run UO in my 2003 partition since boat sailing causes UO to put up that swirling "O" and I loose connection.  Not sure whats up with that.

I need to get the RTM downloaded so that I can get it running on my main box.  As much as I really like my Vista Ultimate x64 I think it is definitally time to embrace Win7 (not that I haven't been since the beta release just not on my main box)

I tried the RTM and it looks/feels pretty darn nice. I used the Beta and the RC and it seems like they fixed pretty much all the bugs. I get all Microsoft operating systems free through the MSDN Academic Alliance at my college, so I'm just waiting until Oct 22 when it will be up on our MSDNAA site so I can download and install it!!! Nothing like getting all of it for free!! Windows 7 is by far the best OS ever released by Microsoft and one of the smoothest/quickest ones as well! I am by no means an MS fanboy, but I am actually quite excited for this!

Ive downloaded both the 32 and 64 bit beta.. and cuase of all the praise will be giving it a shot.  I might even consider upping my old win2k system... or maybe not .. its a stable old workhouse that performs automated tasks nicely (if a bit slowly)

I've been using Windows 7 for ages now.  Had to do the RC reinstall.  Kinda pissed me off, but well worth it.  I have kind of been calling it, Vista Enhanced.  That's basically all it is.  I don't see SO many changes that it's worth buying it as a full price OS when it's just an UPGRADE to Vista... but it's got a lot of useability enhancements I love.  I like dragging windows to half screen with one click?  Love that.  Maximizing by dragging window to top/bottom of screen?  Nice feature.  Also, open a ton of windows, the grab one and shake your mouse! haha

You didn't have to re-install.  you can just upgrade pre
vios Win7 installations.

Yea but that's not the "recommended" way to do it via the dev team. :/  Plus I'd read about problems doing that.  So I just did it the right way.  I don't like having issues. :)

I did it without issue; works great!  The dev team just wanted you to "test" the installer again.  Silly rabbit!

I read a lot of "it works great."  But comon... by the sound of it, you've used Microsoft products for a LONG time also...  I'll bet you 1000 bucks you know EXACTLY why I did it that way. :)  The first time I did a Windows 7 install I waited like THREE HOURS for it to say, OMG, fatal error, we will now revert.  Then I waited ANOTHER 3 hours... haha
