Scripting Chat / Script "Library"
« on: May 15, 2011, 04:58:58 PM »
This is mainly pointed towards TM or Cerv I would imagine, but is there any possibility of getting a script "library" that is indexed and cross-referenced similar to the way EasyUO.com has organized their scripts? I think it would make it a lot easier for people to find the script they need and also so that people can see what other choices they may have for a particular skill training or resource mining script. A ranking system so that people can rate it based on different criteria (easy of use, setup intensity, speed, efficiency, etc) would be stellar! Just a thought to throw out there while 12X is cleaning up the script submission section!

Programming / Operating Systems / Android App Programming
« on: April 13, 2011, 04:42:24 PM »
For anyone who's thinking about going into mobile app development, I can't say enough how much fun it has been working with the Android SDK and writing apps! As part of a Senior Design project, another student and myself wrote an iPhone app for workorder management for a local business over the course of 2 semesters (3 credits per semester). In literally 4 hours, I re-wrote the entire app for the Android platform! Java + XML >> Objective-C + Apple Interface Builder!! The only thing I liked better for iOS was that you can make slightly nicer looking GUI's BUT that is ONLY because iOS only needs to handle 2 different size screens (iPhone/iTouch and iPad). Apple lets you explicitly position objects on the screen, whereas in Android, you need to be much more careful since you don't know if it will be on a 2.4" screen or a 10.1" screen or any size in between. This requires you to put a lot more thought into your layouts (which I actually think is a benefit) and ultimately provides much better flexibility. If anyone is interested in learning the Android platform, I'm happy to help and answer questions. At the end of the summer, if anyone needs any Android development, I might have some time to do some bigger side projects (19 credit final semester, 3 part-time jobs, and wedding planning keeps me quite busy right now).

Off Topic / Nikon D3100 vs Canon t2i
« on: January 05, 2011, 09:12:01 PM »
So I got a nice hulking year-end bonus check from my consulting job ($1500) so I'm going to splurge for my birthday (Jan 17) and buy a DSLR. I have narrowed down my choices to the Nikon D3100 and the Canon t2i. Anyone here good with DSLR's (or have one they might want to brag about?) that could give some good input as to which to get (I'm leaning towards one but I won't say until I get some honest opinions). I'm going to put a placeholder for the pros and cons of each and I will fill them in as we discuss.

Nikon D3100
Pros:
- $539.99 (I've seen it on sale for this price) (Body + standard 18-55mm lens)
- 11 point auto-focus
- Auto-focusing video (albeit not perfect, but better than the t2i)
- 1 year body / 5 year lens warranty
Cons:
- 14.2MP
- 1080P @ 24fps, 720P @ 30fps
- No External Mic Jack
- LCD Display = .23 megapixel

Canon t2i
Pros:
- 17.9MP
- 1080P @ 24fps, 720P/480P @ 50fps
- External Mic Jack (doubt I'll use it)
- LCD Display = 1 megapixel (easier to tell if a picture is blurry or out of focus)
Cons:
- $649.99 (Body + standard 18-55mm lens)
- 9 point auto-focus
- 1 year body / 1 year lens warranty

There's the technical comparison...Now here's the opinions I've been given accompanied by my own:
Nikon cameras are dependable, durable, excellent in low-light, and great for an amateur photographer who is just starting to delve into the photography world (I've been handicapped thus far by my Canon PowerShot A560 point-and-shoot camera). Nikon's guide mode is great for helping out when you can't remember what you needed to adjust and yet you can completely disregard it once you become comfortable. Canon's pictures can often be superior, but you'll probably end up reading the manual front to back and still forget most of it when you wish you could remember. The Nikon wins hands-down in the video category though.

Here's one of my favorite photos from my point-and-shoot. Just took it this past December at Longwood Gardens here in PA. There was a group of photography students (with their Nikons and Canons hehe) working on photographing this one tree. I popped up behind them and snapped this shot:

Scripting Chat / SUO Shard
« on: December 23, 2010, 09:31:57 PM »
So what do people think of possibly starting an SUO freeshard for UO? I've been playing around with RunUO over the past couple days and it seems pretty fun to program with it...Knowing how much some people here enjoying the programming/scripting side of UO....we could probably fix all the broken things in UO and have a pretty kick-@$$ shard! Just a thought! I would love to see some comments!

Off Topic / Christmas Avatar Contest
« on: December 09, 2010, 03:00:30 PM »
Tis the season to have some fun so let's see them! This year, we will award 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place (via poll or my dictatorial decree) the best Christmas themed avatars in (for now at least) 2 categories:

Funny Christmas Avatars

&

Amazing Christmas Avatars (Ahem...you all know what kind this is *cough*Xclio's*cough*)

Things to remember:
#1. Please post it (as well as change your avatar) in this thread so we can keep track of it (in case you change your avatar again)
#2. If possible, host it offsite then embed or link it in the thread to keep down on traffic usage for TM!
#3. Keep within the rules!! (This is mainly a reminder for the Amazing category)

We will vote the week before Christmas and give awards accordingly (not sure what they are...maybe just a cool title on the forums, maybe a billion UO gold, maybe a new car)

*NOTE: To help those who view this site at work...please use the FUNNY avatar as your REAL avatar and just post the AMAZING ones here!

General UO Chat / CodeUO
« on: October 14, 2010, 10:35:15 AM »
So I've thought about learning the client interactions and developing my own version of EUO. I have been looking through UOMachine and UOAI and thinking that if we can get the right minds together, we could either make SUO fully functional, or build a library (C or Java based probably) that would allow users to harness the full power of client interaction. This WOULD mean learning a new language (or at least a Java library for example) but unlike OEUO, would make things EASIER and SHORTER! All the superfluous code would be hidden in the library. I am including a sample class below so you can get an idea of how it might work. If I proceed with Java (this is how I'm leaning right now), you could use the full power of Swing or another GUI builder to make AMAZING menus compared to EUO!

"Tile" class:
Attributes
(int) x
(int) y
(int) z
(string) type
(string) name
(int) layers
(string) flags

Methods
(ArrayList<Tile>) getSurroundingTiles()
(int) distance()

"Container" class
Attributes
(int) x
(int) y
(int) size
(string) kind
(string) id
(string) type
(string) name

Methods
(Item) find(ItemType OR String)
(void) open()
(void) close()
(void) empy(Container container_to_empty_into)

Sample Coding:
Code: [Select]
//Initial coding that would probably be required in all scripts
Character self = new Character(Client.getSelf());

//Code to heal yourself if you've taken damage
if(self.hp<self.maxhp) {
Action.Cast(Magery.Greater_Heal,self);
}

//Code to cast Poison Strike on someone until they're dead
Character enemy = new Character("INSERT ENEMY ID");
while(!enemy.isDead()) {
Action.Cast(Necro.Poison_Strike,enemy);
}

//Code to find a heal pot in your backpack
self.backpack.find(Potion.Heal);

//Code to drink a cure pot if poisoned
if(self.isPoisoned()) {
     Action.DrinkCure();
}

//Code to look auto-open doors
while(true) {
for(Tile tile:self.currentLocation().getSurroundingTiles()) {
if(tile.flag.equals("DOOR") {
Action.OpenDoor(tile);
}
}
}
