Pet Stats

Just saw something on a spreadsheet I'd done a long time ago.

Hit Points are less important on a pet then Resists.

There, I said it. Now deal with it.

Heh.

Here's the data.

HP = Hit points
Res = Resist
Survive = Survivability ( HP / ( 1 - ( RES / 100 ) )
Diff = Difference

Code: [Select]
HP Res Survive Diff
1000 85 6667
1000 84 6250 417
1000 83 5882 368
1000 82 5556 327
1000 81 5263 292
1000 80 5000 263
1667

The difference between an 85 resist and an 80 resist pet is 1667 survivability points.

Code: [Select]
HP Res Survive Diff
1000 85 6667
990 85 6600 67
980 85 6533 67
970 85 6467 67
960 85 6400 67
950 85 6333 67
333

The difference between 1000 HPs and 900 HPs is only 667 Survivability points.

People get a little hung up on stats, especially hit points. Well there you can see that resists are key to a pets survivability, and that hit points aren't nearly as important.

Heck yeah.

I've tried to explain this to friends for so long!!!  I'll take a low hp pet w/ great resists over a high hp pet w/ *bleep* resists any day :P

Another way of looking at this is that 1 point of resist is worth over 60 hit points.

I'm definitely with you OMG , I'll take a resist pet over a stat pet anytime. The only time to get a stat pet is when dex can go well above 125 AND it's for PvP. Though I've never seen any actual numbers, I feel like those super fast pets actually do more/quicker attacks.

My thoughts on pets. They are just tools to me. I don't tame Cu's cause they are a pretty blue or Ice White (unless I'm taming for a quick sell).

I want pets that will survive the best. When I wrote the Taming Appraiser, I did it with a scoring system in mind. I still may put it in one day, but for now I just use the percentages.

I've been using the "Lite" version that doesn't report skills. For *most* pets it works great cause it's just a little quicker.

Now... what I look for.

Max Physical and Fire resistance. That's paramount as most monsters attack with Physical and Fire. Next I look at Poison. Depending on the pet type, I might want better Poison resistance. On pets that cast or heal (cu) Poison resist isn't as important. On pets that do NOT cast cure I want higher Poison resist.

After that it's Energy and then Cold. Very little in the game uses cold damage.

Stats aren't that important to me. I want decent HP's to go with high resists, but as you can see in the first post above, HP's really don't make a huge difference in a pets survivability.

So... If I were to ever get my scoring system put in... it would be based as follows:

40% Physical Resist
30% Fire Resist
5% Cold Resist
15% Poison Resist
10% Energy Resist

60% Hit points
30% Strength
10% Mana

Then:
65% Resists
35% Stats

I *could* get into skills as well, but really it only applies to Greater Dragons. It's nice to get them with high skills, but in the long run it's Resists and HP's that's going to keep it alive.

Keepers to me are pets with over 94% resists AS LONG AS the low resists are in Cold, Energy or Poison. I'll take a 92% resist CU that has max Physical and Fire (just did matter of fact, thanks for the help).

I've been cycling the spawn using your Taming Appraiser Lite as well.
I'm looking for both numbers to be in the 90+ range in the end.
I kept a Greater Dragon last night that was a huge resist upgrade over my tamed one but I'm still hoping to find a resist upgrade that is also a good stat % as well.

60% Hit points
30% Strength
10% Mana

Why hp over strength? I may be wrong, but doesn't strength determine how hard your pets hit and hp? Why not 50/40 or 45/45?

Changing strength by 100 points might result in 5-10 points additional damage. Raising HP's by 100 points will result in a large bump to the pets survivability.

Pets are tanks more then damage output machines. I look at their survivability more then anything. I'd rather have a pet do 10 points less per hit and stay alive longer.

How fast a pet kills monsters also factors into it's survivability... just sayin... :)

OH certainly, but the longer it stays alive, the more damage it can deal ;)

I've just had the best luck with pets that have high resists. Many agree with that philosophy.

Oh yea, resists is always the way to go.  On pets, and on suits. :)  Without resist, you die.  I promise if you have even one point below 70's I'll know it, and I'll be lookin to stick a knife in that resist. :)
