General Discussion / BOD Collection from anywhere on same server
« on: July 15, 2016, 05:30:29 AM »
Not sure if this is well known or not, or even if anyone will care, but I discovered this morning that I could collect BOD's anywhere on the same server using a Razor macro. For example, from my house which happens to be north of Skara but on the same server as Brit, I was able to collect BOD's from Brit without ever leaving the house.

Happy to provide more details if needed.

Have fun.

RebirthUO / Lockpicking spawning chests
« on: November 17, 2015, 01:02:32 PM »
Hi guys -

I created a Lockpicker today just for grins and found that Rebirth doe snot seem to have the standard Trinsic and Vesper Bank spawning chests. Before I keep running all over with my remaining 400 gold and no armor lol, any advice as to if there are any world-spawn low level or other chests to be picked on Rebirth?

Off Topic / I'm cutting the cord...at least most of it anyway...
« on: September 26, 2015, 06:45:07 AM »
I've been bitching about the amount of money I spend on cable, etc forever and I finally start working on cutting the cord. My son and I had a conversation last year, he was 9 at the time, about why when he watches a show on Netflix it is only 22 minutes long but on TV it's 30 minutes long. I was like "AWESOME question!" and we proceeded to talk about that missing 8 minutes being commercials that we pay to watch. We started running averages of, say, 2 hours of TV per day rounds DOWN to 30 minutes of nothing but commercials EVERY DAY! Multiply that by 300 days per year (pretending that 20% of the time a day goes by with no TV, just for example purposes) and we're talking 150 hours per year of COMMERCIALS!

So that conversation got him on board with my master plan to reduce my cable expenses. At the time I was paying $255/mo for a Triple-Play package (Internet, Cable, and VOIP) including $10/mo just for a modem rental! Plus I'm already paying for Netflix and Prime. I also have heard TONS of horror stories about people who have attempted to ease out of the Comcrap organization, with literally months if not years of billing issues, I certainly wanted to approach this with the least amount of hassle.

So, first the hardware. I bough a new cable modem, a Motorola SB6141, for about $70 (7 months worth of rental fees to Comcast). However, before installing this I needed to get my phone moved. For this I chose Ooma. I paid $90 (at Newegg) for an Ooma device which also came with a free TP-LINK TL-WR940N wireless router. I was already in the market for a replacement router so this was a good deal for me (there are often Ooma deals, especially if you can get a referral from an existing member, like me :)). The thing with Ooma is you buy the hardware once then you don't pay for the service, you just pay the monthly state/federal taxes and fees. For me this amounts to about $4.37 month and this is applicable whether I have Ooma, Comcast, or Vonage for my VOIP (landline substitute) phone service. Then that's it, no more phone bill for a savings of $15.00/month which pays for the Ooma device in 6 months.

The trick is to transfer the number from Comcast first. This way you aren't contending with VOIP supporting hardware. However, once the phone number is taken off the triple-play package then the billing goes up and is prorated on a per day basis! My bill went from $255 to $266 when I removed phone service!

Next, replace the cable modem. It's easy and you can do it yourself with the web based configuration interface. Now I was poised to save $25/mo simply by not renting my modem or paying for my phone anymore.

Finally, the most CRUCIAL step. Disconnect all Comcast hardware, put it in a box nice and clean, and bring it to your local Comcast (or other company) office. DON'T CANCEL OVER THE PHONE OR OVER THE INTERNET CHAT!!!!!! This is important, they WILL screw up your billing and you still have to bring your stuff to the office anyway. Show up at the Comcast office with all your hardware and work with the customer rep IN PERSON to remove EVERYTHING but internet from the account including the modem rental that you won't need any longer. Smile a lot, be friendly and you might even get some bonus bandwidth - just saying, it happens here all the time :)

When all is said and done, my next bill will be $85 and that will be for 150Mb cable Internet. This will be a net savings of $170/month. The first two months savings pays for ALL of my up front hardware costs as well as a 1 year code for Hulu Plus which my wife wants so she can watch current shows, and I'm also shopping for an HD Antenna, in this neck of the woods we can pick up about 10 or so channels OTA.

For the TV's we have that aren't Smart TV's I bought Kindle Fire Stick's. There is even an extra cable you can buy to power the stick from local USB on the TV which eliminates a power cable, this is an extra $13 but is worth it if you have power space or run constraints (wall mounted, etc).

The following months savings I'm considering applying toward a basic HTPC build. With this I'll run Kodi (XBMC) and uTorrent with RSS feeds setup to mimic a DVR - although I know it's different, the function and end result will be the same to the other users in the house.

I'll read back over this later to make sure I didn't miss anything but if anyone has any questions, has interest in Ooma or getting an Ooma referral, etc feel free to post here. Also, I would love to hear what others are doing to "cut the cord"!

Code: [Select]
;==================================================
; Script Name: XIIxOveR's Compulsive Carpentry Trainer
; Author: XIIxOveR
; Version: 1.0
; Revision: 05/2014
; Purpose: Train Carpentry
;==================================================
Description:
As with all of my training scripts, I needed to train a skill and wasn't totally happy with my script options so I threw one together. It's not perfect but it did the trick for me! ; Train Carpentry from 0 to GM using resources from a secure in your bank or home. It will pull carpentry tools from the secure if not using tinkering, or even if you just have a ton you want to get rid of before tinkering. If Tinkering, script will create Smoothing Planes and requires you have at least 31 Tinkering skill.

Script includes the 12x RoT Timer for Siege and Mugen.

Instructions:
 1. Put normal wood, iron ingots if tinkering, and Carpentry tools if not tinkering into a secure in your home or bankbox.
 2. If Tinkering, must have at least one Tinker Tool in your characters backpack or in the secure.
 3. If using the bankbox make sure to have it open, your secure must be visible before starting
 4. Hit Play and follow the prompts

Notes:
 1. Tinkering Smoothing Planes requires a minimum of 30.1 Tinkering however the minimum skill will cause you to fail most of the time. Recommend at least 50.
 2. The Boards used counter merely tracks the number of boards dragged into the backpack to be used. It is meant to give a general idea of the number used and will not be exact.

General UO Chat / Sampire - weapons, tactics, etc
« on: January 17, 2014, 06:38:54 AM »
Hey all -

Because I've always played mages a lot of this is new to me so take it easy on this old guy :)

Just trying to think through my weapons a little bit and wondering how other people are keeping armed for solo'ng spawns and what your tactics are. For example, last night I played around with the first two levels at an Ilsh Meph spawn just to practice a little. I was just using a random Wrong cursed Radiant with some decent mods for constant Whirlwind attacks to see how it would go. Pretty cool, I like the tactic. It was painfully obvious that the third and fourth levels weren't going to be a cakewalk without some weapons tailored specifically for the spawn.

I decided Fire weapons would be best for the Meph spawn, kind of an obvious decision there. I know I can go with just Arachnid slayer (and maybe an Elemental for level 4) but going with Spider and Terathan Slayers will give 3 x damage instead of 2 x damage of the Arachnid however this means switching back and forth between weapons.

Also, if the Damage Increase cap is 300 then I guess there isn't much of a reason to roll with the individual slayer weapons instead of Super Slayer if I already have 100 DI on my suit, correct?

So I guess if I'm going with a Spider Slayer, for example, I should remove the Damage Increase on the weapon since it's not really helpful at that point.

What do you do? Do you like to cap DI on the suit and just use a Super Slayer to simplify things? Do you like to go with the 300% DI on the non-Super Slayer weapons to get back those Imbue slots?

I'm also going to switch to a Double Axe instead of a Radiant I think. This will give me the whirlwind still but then I'll gain Double Strike instead of the Bladeweave of the Radiant (worthless IMO). Double strike coupled with Counter Attack should put out some nice extra damage.

So, I suppose I can simplify things and use an 100% Fire Arachnid Slayer Double Axe with 40 DI and another 60 on my suit, 40 SSI gets me to 1.25 at 150 Stamina so this should be pretty easy to maintain. Then this weapon should work well with the spawn and with the champ itself.

Same logic to apply to other spawns.

On top of this, it seems like a general purpose weapon of some type is also in order. I'm thinking that I don't want to waste imbues on slayer properties or bother with 100% Elemental damage on a general purpose weapon but DI, SSI, Hit Area, Mana Leech, and maybe HLD or something would probably be good. Then I could just use Consecrate as needed.

Thoughts? Comments? Advice?

Well after burning a few spined kits to get the feel for things I'm starting to understand how this plays with Imbuing and how Enhancing still plays a roll and why I might want to sparingly use a Forged Metal too, etc.

Using just the Spined kits I was able to make some pretty nice pieces and avoid using any high-end imbuing ingredients at all (not counting the 4 relic frags per piece for 7 LMC but I don't consider this high-end since I easily farm that many in Shame or Wrong in about ten minutes or less). I didn't have a Forged Metal tool so I destroyed tons of stuff with my enhancement attempts but overall my luck wasn't too bad. I also didn't PoF anything up first since I was just playing around and didn't want to destroy PoF'd armor on enhancement. I was also pretty conservative with the low-end ingredients.

My goal was to build a basic, leather armor, "throw-away" suit for my still training Sampire. Throw-away because I wasn't PoF'ng or using high-level ingredients until I figured out the most efficient ways to use them with reforging. My process was basically something along the lines of:

1) First I created a spreadsheet to work on the suit build. I know, may seem obsessive but it helped immensely!
2) Figured out what non-crafted items I would be using and added all properties to the spreadsheet. This gave me the remaining resists, etc required so I could best figure out how to map out the pieces.
3) I created some exceptional leather armor pieces and started putting together items that fit the resist requirements while attempting to minimize my resist imbue requirements
4) Because I was building a suit to be in Vamp form my Fire was roughly -6 without the use of 4 armor pieces so I knew that Fire was going to be a resist Imbue on most of the pieces (this was before I played with reforging since I had no runic tailor kits). Poison was my next lowest but I knew I wouldn't need to Imbue poison on all the pieces.
5) Imbued Fire on a piece, then enhanced with Barbed to get the most resists that I could. I learned that with this method you don't need to max out the Imbue and use Boura pelts (or whatever) but the enhance would still max out the resist, e.g. imbued 17 Fire then the Enhance brought it up to the Cap of 19.
6) After all this I ended up at a place where I needed just sleeves but the resists needed to be something like 6/19/8/19/5. I didn't want to burn 2 imbues on resists so I broke down and bought a 10-pack of Spined Kits.

At this point I was focused 100% on making sleeves via the reforging process that would finish off my suit, learning more about armor reforging in the process.

I figured out a couple things, maybe not all true :)

1) There doesn't seem to be a reason to use Structural or Fundamental. I suppose if I were making training suits or something where the Brittle and no repair didn't matter I would explore these but I figured Shame loot has this stuff covered already.
2) If you want to overcap a resist, don't choose 2 names - only choose 1. This seemed to bring up the intensity of the resist dramatically and there were no other crap mod's wasting Imbuing slots. With this in mind it becomes nothing more than making exc leather sleeves and reforging until I got the high Fire I was looking for. I was getting mostly 20+ in either Cold or Energy for whatever reason, I even got one piece with 19 Energy and 23 Cold. Finally I hit 24 Fire on a piece and decided this was the one.
3) It may be possible to craft a piece with Spined that hits a high-end cap - for example, 150 luck instead of 100, but apparently don't count on it.
4) Unlike Imbuing, it seems that the reforge-generated resist DOES NOT work against the enhancing cap! I ended up enhancing this piece with Barbed (and with my eyes closed I might add since I must have lost 20+ sleeves through this whole process (I know not that many really but I'm still playing low-end here so it was frustrating)) and wound up with 27 Fire! I don't recall which now but I also ended up with another resist at 19 so at Imbue time I ended up with two Imbue slots burned. However, I had unimbued sleeves with the neighborhood of 75 total resists! Not too shabby with a Spined kit.

At this point I Imbued LMC/Mana/Regen on all the pieces and newly armed with my test suit that cost me nothing that I didn't already have from training Imbuing and unwravelling Shame loot (and the $1 worth of IRL cash for the Spined Kits I burned).

The next suit will start with Reforging the leather pieces instead to get the resist caps that I want. I think I'm getting it now...

Off Topic / Printers
« on: December 26, 2013, 10:33:02 AM »
I'm shopping for a printer right now. I decided that I'd like to get something I can easily scan to PDF with, preferably with a doc feeder, copy, and print in color. Because we don't print a lot every day we tend to dry out inkject cartridges so I'm thinking laser. I'm also a big fan of auto-duplexing, although this can be majorly cost prohibitive!

Anyone running a color laser multi-function with duplexer? I'm thinking about maybe splurging on a HP Color LaserJet Pro 400 M475DW or M475DN All-in-One. It seems that the difference is $50 gives me wireless with the DW. The problem is that a) we're talking $500-$700 for a printer and b) when the time comes to by new cartridges I'm in for another $400! Guess you get what you pay for though...

Anyone have thoughts or advice about printers? About these models in particular? Other models you like better and why?

I'm starting to talk myself out of the laser because of the $$ but, on the other hand, the included toner (or whatever it's called in laser world) will last a very long time in my house the way we use it. I try only to print when I have to so it will mostly be kids printing schoolwork and pley-related stuff.

I'm a paperless records kind of guy so the ability to auto-feed docs into a scanner that will email pdf's (or better yet, automatically put them in Google Docs) is probably more important to me than the printing.

General UO Chat / Visual C++ Runtime Error anyone?
« on: November 14, 2013, 05:31:59 AM »
Howdy -

Just finished building a Windows XP SP3 VM using MS Virtual Workstation 2007 (Windows XP happens to be the .VHD I have on hand). Just a base install of XP with SP3, IE8, and all current security patches.

When I run Ultima Online it has to start by going through the full patch download process as this is a vanilla instance. When running the patcher I can't make it any further than part way through anim.mul before it crashes with:

Code: [Select]
---------------------------
Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
---------------------------
Runtime Error!

Program: C:\Games\UO\Client\UO.bin

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information.

I suspect that I could eventually figure out WTF is going on but if anyone here has ever run into that it would sure be helpful to know what the resolution was.

Oh, and when I say "vanilla" I mean no virus scanning, no malware scanning, no firewall, no nothing running at all! I'm just trying to build an image.

Thanks!

General UO Chat / Refinement Amalgamator in an empty bag?
« on: October 21, 2013, 04:57:48 AM »
Ok, weird one for me, wondering if anyone knows wth...

I have bags that seem to be empty when opened but that are showing items (e.g. "2/125 Items"). I threw together an inventory routine and it shows that I have 2 "Refinement Amalgamator" item ID's in the bag. Also, I have many other bags with only x number of items in the bag but showing 1 more item count - e.g. all of the 16th Anniversary Bags show only the horse, the plant deed, and a handwritten note but that there are 4/125 items in the bag. Of course running the inventory on the bag shows these three items plus a "Refinement Amalgamator".

So, WTF is a Refinement Amalgamator and why the Hell can't I see them??

General UO Chat / UO Item Merchants - Who do you use?
« on: September 18, 2013, 12:04:35 PM »
Since what seems to be a total shutdown for mmo.sc I have a need for purchases but no confidence in who I should purchase from. I need transfer tokens from time to time, including now, and I'd like to find a reliable source.

Any recommendations? Who do you use? Why?

Thanks for the input!

Player Templates / Sampire/Whammy weapon skill choice
« on: July 25, 2013, 07:57:52 AM »
Have always gone with Swords for no particular reason but I've also struggled doing much with it at all too. I've been watching a couple guys solo coon pretty quickly and they are using Archer Sampires, I'm thinking about trying it out.

What do you use and why?

Off Topic / "Cloud" storage - what's your take?
« on: July 23, 2013, 11:38:08 AM »
What do you use for online storage and/or file synchronization? Do you use anything at all? Why one over the other?

Since Microsoft Mesh was retired earlier this year I've been trying to decide what to do with my data. I've been playing around with a number of them and am finding pros and cons to all (I'll spare you all my thoughts and findings, it would take me longer to write than for you to read but neither of us will have used our time wisely).

So which is it?

World of Warcraft / WoW Gold
« on: December 24, 2012, 04:42:05 AM »
Hey all -

I know there are a fair amount of people here who either play or have played WoW. I'm looking to pick up some gold for my son for Xmas and I'm hoping someone here may have a recommendation for a reasonable and trustworthy WoW gold vendor.

Depending on the price I'm looking for 10 to 50k on Trollbane.

Merry Christmas!

.NET Programming / Time to take the plunge
« on: October 22, 2012, 04:51:37 AM »
I've decided to take the plunge and start learning a new programming language. Based on my background in MS technologies I thought the best jump for me would be to step off into VB.NET and C#.

I'm looking into my options for obtaining a licensed copy of Visual Studio because I thought this might be the best starting point but, of course, not being a developer by trade I can't justify the costs. I'm looking into options I have at work through our MSDN subscription but my job title is Lead Infrastructure Engineer so they may not want to help me out.

Any advice as to other ways to LEGALLY obtain licensing for Visual Studio? Any advice as to other options for VB.NET or C# development platforms? I would prefer to go the route of something that is seen as more standardized in the industry as I'd like the skills I begin to develop to be job-market applicable, including the development platform/s I get accustomed to.

Gracias mucho mis amigos!
