Ok, how do I resize my avatar to a smaller version?

I think its a little big...

There's a few ways to do it.  If you don't want to install a new program, there's Gifworks:

Also, you should give The Gimp a try.

Seems like I'm always Hookin' up TM (http://www.noupe.com/gimp-brushset/1000-free-high-resolution-gimp-brushes.html) with cools stuff  ;D

A must have for us GIMPers.

Most excellent link Cerv. I use Gimp daily nowadays albeit mostly for screenshot related work but I lub it. Going to have to give those brushes a look.
