Title: Mining Saltpeter
Post by: Petkiller on November 05, 2010, 05:56:06 AM
I saw Saltpeter on my home shard priced over 90 per so I started mining again.  I tried mining in standard locations in Trammel, Malas, Fel, Tur Mur.  I never saw any for over 4 hours of mining.  I was told by a friend to mark inside Dungeons.  It was almost an hour before I found a "huge" "niter" deposit.  I included the item id and had my script mine it.  Here are the IDs I found for niter deposits:VGH_QGH_RGH_WGH_BHH.   I ran for a few hours and was only seeing a little over 200 saltpeter an hour.  I put a luck suit on my miner and every deposit I find now is Massive(the biggest I think) and I am seeing over 500 saltpeter an hour.

Thanks for the info and the id's .

Does it spawn above ground I wonder?

I have not witnessed it yet but am thinking about the tunnels under you know where might produce the niter deposits.

Won't every major patch cause vendors to respawn, though?  Hmm...

For anyone interested in what happens when niter is found when mining and how to retrieve it, read on.

When digging, a rock graphic will appear near your character and may look like this (depending on amount of luck):
EUO ID = WGH
OEUO ID = 4962
Gigantic

The rock itself needs to be targeted, and per shovel use, you will received anywhere from 0-10 pieces of saltpeter (perhaps more) which go directly into your pack. Over the course of mining the rock, it will change from one graphic to the next each progressively getting smaller. The above image is what a gigantic deposit will look like. The following images are the progressions from largest to smallest.

Massive
EUO ID = VGH
OEUO ID = 4963

Huge
EUO ID = RGH
OEUO ID =4967

Large
EUO ID = QGH
OEUO ID = 4964

Small
EUO ID = BHH
OEUO ID = 4969

Once you've reached this smallest size rock, the rock will disappear. The only journal entry for discovering a niter deposit occurs at the first instance of a niter vein discovery. That message reads: "You have uncovered a (size) deposit of niter! Mine it to obtain saltpeter." Successfully mining the rock will yield the journal message: "You extract (number) saltpeter from the niter deposit." Failure to obtain saltpeter produces this message: "You mine the niter deposit but fail to produce any usable saltpeter."

Not every niter discovery will start with a 'gigantic' rock since it is luck based, but will follow the gradual depletion states as described above.

Happy Mining!

Edit: updated rock names and journal messages

The first luck suit I was using was just around 700 luck and that was getting me around 500 saltpeter an hour.  I took out all the mining spots that never gave me saltpeter and upgraded my luck suit to 1760 and now I average around 1k saltpeter per hour using a modified MWinc miner script.  I get almost all Gigantic deposits now.    Has anyone tried mining saltpeter in fel yet?  I just hate to take my miner to a fel dun in a luck suit.

thank you much for the ID's.  i used the info to add my own sub in on a recall miner.  i had a general question reguarding mining saltpeter.  do other folks here notice much difference in timing with mining saltpeter vs. regular ore?  other than writing a short script to unlock paragon chests.  this was my second, semi-effective, script writing attempt.

I'm trying to add the salt peter ID's to a mining script so it will mine the deposits, but I have no idea where to start.. can someone please point me to the right direction?

Once the niter deposit appears, it triggers a message in the journal. I'm thinking there is some way to monitor that message and if the message shows up, then the script looks for the deposit item types and mine it?

kubism,

I'm not sure how new you are at scripting.  i have only been doing it for about 3 months and i was able to add in my own, fairly unreliable, niter mining sub.  i added it in on spewy's recall miner.  it seemed to be the easiest for me to understand.  much of what is in there i do not yet understand.  i have a tougher time following along in my head with the always-changing %variables.

this one line will put the niter in the #find areas:

finditem WGH_VGH_RGH_QGH_BHH G_2

from there on out you can target accordingly.
i have had my variation of the miner script run all day.  i personally had a tougher time getting my script to leave my cheesy sub loop.

good luck fellow newbie scripter kubism

Ty for the reply, I'm pretty new at scripting, but I understand some basic programming, so I have some ideas in mind, just wasn't sure how to go about doing the actions. I'll take a look at the script you mentioned, and hopefully be able to figure it out.

Really appreciate the help.

not a problem.  You will be able to set your #ltargetid variable to the #findid of the niter you found.   don't forget to set #ltargetkind #findkind also.  without the #ltargetkind it does not appear to work well.  not sure why but remember reading this somewhere in addition to trial/error.  if you have programming experience then you should breeze right thru this stuff.  for me this is sorta like learning french or german.  and i got a D in both of those in high school.

So i've loaded up Spewy's script, and tried to add the subs. I can't for the life of me figure out where to add the subs. I guess my past experiences in VB has failed me.. been too long since I've last did anything.  smokinjoe26, do you mind posting your variation so I can take a look at how the editing is done?

thank you.

If it can help when saltpeter pops it s always on first attempt per 8*8 inside dungeons, with approximately 5% chance per 8*8. That chance will reset every 5 minutes. On boat mining, there is a chance every swing, but it s around 1.25% (gm mining and 750 luck).
