Troubleshooting Ongoing Lockup Issue - 3DO benchmarks
« on: February 12, 2010, 06:51:04 AM »

I think this is round four of me hitting you folks up for opinions and I really appreciate all of the help I have gotten so far. Thank you in advance to anyone who takes the time to look and offer any insight.

I am still having lockup issues with the system I built a couple of months back.  It ran fine for a while, but then developed a pattern of locking up.  I did some troubleshooting with Mass and found a heat issue that was pretty significant.  Under 35-40% CPU load my temp readings were maxing out at 100C.  I went out and bought and then installed a new CPU fan that appears to have taken care of the heat problem. CPU now runs under 40 on all four cores at load, GPU a bit warmer at up to mid 50s.  However, I am still having the lockup issue.  It seems to happen when I switch windows, often under low CPU load (I have realtemp up all the time now) and I can't figure out a pattern.  Other than the operating system and the IE browser, the only software I have run on the system thus far includes: ICQ 6.5, EUO, UO, ESET, and now some temp monitor programs, 3DO and prime.  I had google earth on it, but removed it. I installed UO Cartographer, but have not used it.

I went to the ASUS site and updated the sound drivers. *UPDATE*  I am pretty sure that I looked at the audio drivers on the ASUS site previously and then didn't update them because Windows had given me an update message on a realtek update and I did that instead and put off the audio update from the ASUS site to see if the update I did from Windows would work. It didn't.  I went back and dowloaded the audio update from the ASUS site today and installed it. Someone mentioned in the shoutbox that this had resolved a Win7 lockup problem they had had. (OMG? maybe).

I updated the video drivers from NVIDIA. Not sure what to do next to figure it out.  I ran a 3DO benchmark and it completed that process, although I don't really know how to interpret the scores.

*UPDATE*  I ran prime again today for a stress test. No errors at half an hour. No temp readings above 65C.  The first core runs hotter than the other three. Top temps consecutively were 65C 61C 61C 59C.  They drop to the low 30s withing a minute after I pull the test. At room temp they run at 35C 30C 34C 30C, sometimes a bit cooler.  GPU usually runs at 48C.

Here are the system components:

Asus P6T Motherboard - LGA 1366, Intel X58, SATA, SLI Ready, CrossFireX Ready, Triple Channel DDR3 support, RAID, Hyperthreading support
Intel Core i7 920 Processor BX80601920 - 2.66GHz, LGA 1366, 4.8GT/s QPI, 8MB L3 Cache, Quad-Core, HyperThreading, Bloomfield,
Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 64BIT Operating System Software - OEM DVD
2 Gold Tri Channel 6GB PC12800 DDR3 Memory - 1600MHz, 6144MB (3 x 2048)
XFX GeForce GTS 250 Core Edition Video Card - 1024MB DDR3, PCI Express 2.0, (2) DVI, SLI Ready
Ultra LSP650 650-Watt Power Supply - ATX, SATA-Ready, SLI-Ready, 135mm Fan, Lifetime Warranty
Tempest ATX Mid-Tower Case - Clear Sides, Front USB, eSATA Ports
Acer V173 B 17" TFT LCD Monitor - 5ms, 1280x1024 (SXGA), 2000:1 Dynamic, 4:3, VGA, Black
Acer V173 B 17" TFT LCD Monitor - 5ms, 1280x1024 (SXGA), 2000:1 Dynamic, 4:3, VGA, Black
Seagate 1.5TB Serial ATA HD 7200/32MB/SATA-3G

And then I added:
Cooler Master V8 180 Watt Cooling Solution

I planned to run it with the two monitor side by side, but have not hooked up the second monitor yet.

I would recommend stress testing your CPU as it sounds like you might have been lucky enough to damage your CPU with those extremely high temps.  Download Prime95, it is a CPU stress testing software that will load out all of your cores at 100% running calculations.  Do not have anything else open while this is happening.

I didn't read what your configuration was in particular so I am assuming your not overclocking thus this stress test should comfortably run without failure.  If one of the cores throws an error then you have found your problem.

I ran prime twice, once looking for the problem, and once again after I installed the new heat sink.  I don't think it produced errors either time, but I am not 100% sure I would know what it would look like if it did, so I will run it again.

The second time I ran it I did it with the RealTemp program that cycled the CPU load and tracked performance at 10% load increments.  Not sure what the scores meant, but I didn't get any error message.

Are you manually confirming all of the various memory timing settings in your BIOS match the chips? Try setting the voltage manually to 1.65 and the timings to the higher of the two sets of ram. The higher numbers run slightly slower, but this may stop the lockups.

Looks like voltage can be a huge issue for the i7 chip. Visit the MFG website for you memory to verify settings that are in BIOS.

Thanks for the feedback Py.  I am sure these are great suggestions, but I am not sure where to begin to do what you are suggesting without some further clarification/direction. I see three headscratchers in your post for someone with my lack of skillz.

1. Manually confirming memory timing setting in my bios match the chips. No clue how I would do this.

2. Set the voltage manually to 1.65 and the timings to the higher of the two sets of ram. *Scratches head again*

3. Verify MFG website for memory chips to verify settings in BIOS. I think I can figure out how to get to the MFG website. *vacant look...* Where do I look for settings in BIOS? Is it in that ream of crap I put in the first post?

I am an untapped wealth of ignorance in this area. I suspect I am lucky that when I put this thing together and turned on it didn't ignite into a ball of fire.

Ok let me see if I can help you through some of this.

1. Get manual for mainboard and read through to learn how to access BIOS and find the section where it talks about RAM settings.  Usually towards the back of the manual is where is breaks out the info about getting into BIOS and what each sections means.

2.  Go to MFG website of memory and look up settings for Timing and voltage, although with i7 cpu we already know voltage shold not be above 1.65

3. Use information from step 1 and 2 to manually verify the BIOS settings of your RAM to MFG specs. keep in mind about the known voltage issue with cpu needing to be 1.65 or lower.

We will get into actual adjusting if you need to, but first lets just verify.

Search the interweb for your motherboard and this same issue. One thing we've all discovered is that we are not that unique in the world. Chances are someone (or many) have had the exact same problem. It's just a matter of searching for the information correctly.

Update:

So I read the User Guide for the motherboard, a bunch of articles online, and I familiarized myself with the BIOS utility.  I think I figured out how to overclock my system, but I couldn't find enough information in the manual or online about the initial setup to make me comfortable, so I called ASUS tech suppport.

When I spoke with tech suppport I got a BIOS tech and he told me that their boards go out without being enabled to sychronized memory and CPU at intel's request. He said lockups on new systems are an industry wide issue as manufacturers are all doing this. Whatever.  He said that all I had to do to get the memory timings properly set was to enable the built in Ai Overclock Tuner by setting it to X.M.P..  I am going to run it for a while to make sure the system is stable.

Thanks for all of your help everyone!

-P

No worries Mass, BECAUSE IT STILL DIDN'T WORK!!!

Pretty funny at least.  I downloaded CPU-Z to verify the fix and it was still wrong, so I went in and manually changed the memory settings to 8-8-8-24 and 1.65V per the manufacturer specs.

By the time I figure this out I might actually know something. :)

I got the manual settings to run and have stress-tested my system with six iterations of UO running fully automated with various scripts plus the overseer. Way beyond what was freezing me up 100% of the time in less than five minutes before this change.  Thanks for everyone's help!!

Next project for this system: OVERCLOCK!!!

Before over clocking. Please Read, read and read some more. Also read!  Over clocking is fun and time consuming.  Anytime over clocking is concerned you will do one thing. For every action there is an opposite and opposing reaction. so when you get more speed and work out of you CPU you also will get more HEAT !!!  There are 3 ways of getting around this Air cooled, Water Cooled, and professional liquid coolant systems. Air cooled being the cheapest and Liquid cooled being the most expensive. With Water cooling coming some where in the middle. Air cooling is dependant on your power supply and case.  You want an air cooled system to be as areo dynamic as possible. You want air convection to be happening inside your system. You want cooler outside air coming in your system and cooling everything from CPU, HardDrive, Video Card, and also North and South Bridge chips and then the hot air being pushed back out in another direction.  With Water and Liquid Cooling systems.  Think about those words for just a minute. Water and Electricity!? Not a good combination!  You have a resevoir, pump, and 1 or more cooling blocks(they look similar to a heatsink but move water through them).  The resevoir hold cool water plus helps cool returning water. The pump moves the water or liquid through the system to keep it cool.  The cooling blocks move the water or liquid through them and cool the system much better than air because of the way the system is designed.  The one big negative of Water/Liquid cooling systems is every connection/rubber hose has to be a super tight connection or you get a condition I like to call 'Fried MotherBoard' or FMB.  There are prebuilt Liquid and water cooling systems several made by Cooler Master and other brands also, just the first that comes to mind. But I recommend you build your own much more fun.  If you decide to go full blown and wish to try some of this out give me a pm or place down a post and i will put up links and much more data.  I used to have a web site on all this.  I have a lot to share in this area and it is a wonderful hobby.

Thanks Mass, if I do decide to give overclocking a go I will definitely reach out.  For now I am going to play with the system until I am comfortable that it is really stable.  Thanks again for all of your help!
