Title: Anyone ever had a root canal done?
Post by: Ultima on November 15, 2011, 05:30:49 PM
I've been in agonizing pain the past 3 days with a toothache that's become infected and spread to my jaw. I was hoping the tooth would just fall out and I'd be done with it but such isn't the case.

After doing some research on the internet it looked like a root canal is what was going to be needed and my visit to the Dentist today confirmed it.

They want to do it Thursday...

I might have to shop around for a better price since I'm an unemployed student and everything will be out of pocket.

Has anyone here ever had a root canal done? Did it hurt like hell?

They also want to pull my wisdom teeth...

Things to look forward to.

I imagine it can be much worse than the pain I'm in now. Once a tooth becomes infected it's hurts like a mother let me tell you. I don't know how much worse it can get. ???

I've had a root canal - two actually, no big deal. Expensive but as far as discomfort goes, nothing like the pain you're probably going through right now without one. I remember thinking "why does everyone make such a big deal of THAT?" afterward.

Thanks 12X that's exactly what I wanted to hear! ;)

The toothache pain is unreal and I'm not sure the alternative of "healing" could be much worse. I thought when I've heard of toothache that it pertained simply to the tooth itself but the bacteria/infection has given me headaches, fever, and a pain in my jawbone which is excruciating. Literally incapacitated me at times.

It ranks in the top 5 of painful experiences I've ever had in my life. I can't imagine too many things being much worse.

You've instilled confidence in me with your words thanks for sharing your experience. :)

If you want to reduce the cost... Do what I do when I get stitches and such, ask for no anesthesia.

Well I can't say that I hear THAT very often ;)

No problem man, get it done! I've been in the same boat with tooth pain on a couple of occasions, pain that percocet would barely even touch.

Had one done on an eye tooth.  The pain is very minimal.  Most dentists will prescribe you Oxycontin for afterwards, too.  Mine was sore for ~1 week, but it was a dull, easy to ignore, sore.

The one thing I would caution is the fallout of a root canal.  Your tooth is now dead.  You *WILL* have to have a crown done in the future.  Not immediately by any means, but eventually.  I had mine done ~3 years ago and it's starting to show discolor at the base just now, which I understand is common.

So, make sure you keep up that dental insurance so when you do have to get the crown you don't have to pay through the nose for it.

It seems like pulling wisdom teeth is a good earner for dentists... I had all 4 of mine pulled long ago...  I was never 100% convinced that was absolutely necessarily,  as my siblings in Europe haven't had theirs pulled,  and like any surgery wisdom teeth pulling comes with risks...  You might want to shop around and get a second opinion on that one as wisdom teeth pulling can be mighty expensive depending on how easy yours are to pull, don't go with the cheapest person though .. lowest bidder is never a good place for important stuff..   At the very least get an opinion on how urgent ie can you put it off a couple years until you have insurance.

I never had mine pulled going against the suggestion of my Dr.  Every 5 years or so, they try and crowd my existing teeth and last week was one of those episodes.  Mine are extreme cases, though.  My lower molars are oriented perpendicular to the rest of my teeth.  The Xrays are shocking.  But they are normally happy.

I have 1 Wisdom tooth left and it looks like it's going bad according to the X-rays and I can see inside my mouth it doesn't look good. It's the pulling of the Wisdom tooth that has me scared. They don't pull wisdom teeth in Europe? I really don't get it...mankind has made it this far why did they start pulling wisdom teeth?

$1700 to pull the wisdom tooth, the root canal and put on a crown. $500 down and 8 payments of $150. Not sure how fair a price that is.

those prices are crazy.

I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth pulled when I was 18. I went en for a teeth cleaning and left with no wisdom teeth, which meant I probably didnt need them pulled. They shot my mouth up with lidocaine and went to town. An hour later I left with bleeding gums and a prescription for percocet and a refil.

The pain you have now is worse than after a root canal.  You could probaby do it with novacaine and no general to save money, but it will be rough. Pulling wisdom teeth is good practice if they are decaying, but is probably not an emergency. Most US dentists pull them because they are hard to brush and prone to cavities.  I didn't have mine pulled until they started getting cavities.

You can't skip on a root canal though if you need it. Seems arcane, but you can die from an infected tooth.

My wisdom teeth were all totally buried and going under other teeth or some such thing... they knocked me out and took over 2-3hrs to remove all 4 ...  As normally with these things i woke up in the middle and they knocked me out good and proper the second time...  I was left with 4 pits at the back of mouth that i had to somehow keep clean until they healed....  Mainly mouth washes consisting of  50/50 mix of hydrogen peroxide and water or maybe it was 1/3 2/3.. do not remember how long if anything the pain lasted etc...  but do remember being uncomfortable for quiet sometime.

Depending on how difficult pulling the wisdom teeth is you can be left with nerve damage resulting in a permanent pins and needles feeling in your lips... I remember odds were 3% for me which i considered very high... but luckily I had no adverse side effects.  Of course all this may have since changed as mine were pulled about 20 years ago.

i must of got luck with my wisdom teeth getting pulled out.

They came right out, i had pits, but they were healed in 3 days. No pain or discomfort even after they pulled them. I was smoking weed an hour after they were pulled (not smart I was told)

I'm having major anxiety about making the call and telling them to go ahead and do it. Right now with the antibiotics and mortrin I'm not in pain at the moment.

Funny how when I was in serious pain that there wasn't any hesitation on my part...I was good and ready. Now with the antibiotics and motrin I'm draggin my feet.

Not sure what to do....I need to call within the hour or set it up for next week sometime.

Maybe I could buy some time and get it done next week and get a few hardy meals in before the procedure. I haven't mentally prepared myself.

Comments like : "It's going to be rough" and "Close your eyes when they bring out the tools" aren't helping.

I'm a big baby. :'(

I am sorry, the "rough" comment I made was in response to an earlier suggestion you do it without sedation. I guess I was suggesting that maybe that was not a good idea.

I honestly think you should just do it.  I had my wisdom teeth out while sedated, and I was even awake for part of it, but it was still no big deal. I opened my eyes to see the dentist had a knee on the side of my head to give him leverage while yanking on a tooth and I was flying so high I didn't care.  I was eating the next day too -- if only meatloaf -- and I never had a problem.  You have definitely put up with much worse now, maybe even while on motrin.

Painless.  However, there is 1 complication I had with a rootcanal that was horrible. for a month and a half, small blood clots were forming inside the tooth.  And I had to have the tooth opened and closed  several times.  The pain from the pressure was outrageous.  And the amount of Vicodin I had to take was horrible.  I can't even take vicodin anymore without getting a headache.  I developed some adverse reaction to the stuff after having to take so much for so long.

Going in tommorrow! ???

I probably won't get any sleep tonight but it has to get done sometime. I went for a bike ride and pretty much decided I needed to man up and get it done. Just before I hopped in the shower a burst of pain came and that sealed the deal.

Thanks all for sharing your experiences. I'll be able to share my own this time tomorrow.

Root canal... ehh...  I fell asleep the last time they were drilling on me.  I have had my jaw broken, wired shut, several root canals since I was 15, I can't seem to stay awake when I'm all kicked back in that comfy chair.  lol...  No biggie.  take your ipod and kick back.

Hardcore, bro.  Hardcore.

Whatever reduces the cost!

1 stitch up, 8 stitches with anesthesia, 967$

5 separate stitch ups, something like 120 stitches, ~570$.

Say no to drugs. :>

If it hurts too bad, punch the dentist! :>

Na but seriously, pain is only temporary. You'll be fine.

They just ended up doing the root canal and not pulling my wisdom tooth. They gave me plenty of novocaine and it was pretty much painless.

Novocaine is slowly wearing off so we'll see how I feel in a couple more hours. All I really have is a bit of a headache which could be due to all the anxiety I had.

Gotta go back and get more work done later but I'm glad I got this taken care of.

The pain caused from the infection before I started taking the antibiotics was friggin' insane.

Onward...forward! :)

I've gone through 3 dentist's in the last 5 years and every one seems to say at the initial meeting that it's amazing that I have my wisdom teeth and I have really good insurance to which I say I'm only here for a cleaning and exam.  I'd second the whole evolution thing and we still have these teeth...
