I saw that the Game of Thrones/Fire and Ice series has been picked up and produced by HBO.  I liked the books alright and am curious to see if it works as a series.  Starts in April.  Has potential I think:

If HBO is picking it up to do a series, I have a feeling it will be well worth watching.  Seems that everything that they do is quite good, and has been that way for years now.

Amen, Gimlet.  Amen.  i'm going to have to reread the entire darn series now, because it's been most of a decade since he finished the last one I read...

Give me Jim Butcher anytime.  Once a year like clockwork, more or less...

There are a ton of fantasy series I wish HBO would do. HBO can usually make anything worth watching. I have been wanting some David Eddings or Terry Brooks tv series or at least movies.  Jim Butcher is a fantastic author, hopefully people start demanding more fantasy-novel based programming.
I love science fiction, toy boxes, and comic books.

I watched the first episode.  The covered a lot of material pretty quickly and did a solid job.  Off to a good start, will make up my mind next week.

I agree about Shannara series I wish they'd made some movies out of his books!

Game of Thrones surprised me with the amount of sex involved. It's like half soft porn these new fantasy series that have come out the last year or two on Showtime and HBO. But hey...who am I to complain? Sex sells!

The sex is definitely in the books, but I was surprised a bit too.  Its pretty bawdy.  I guess with the success of Sparticus HBO has to get the freak on too.

Two episodes in and I am digging the HBO version.  I don't think there is enough tread left on the actress playing Lady Stark, and the actor playing Snow bugs me just a bit, but otherwise the casting is very solid, the acting very good the direction is acceptable and it looks pretty amazing.  One scene where they time lapsed a group of travelers and smeared their faces with coal dust to show that they had been traveling a while was sort of poorly done, but I didn't otherwise find much fault with it.  The Lannister casting is really good.  Love the actors playing Thyrion and Jaime.

I wasn't high on Lady Stark the first 2 episodes either, but her character seemed a lot cooler the last 2 eps.

You don't like Snow? Really? He has one of the most likable chars imo. Maybe he's just different from the books version, which I wouldn't know since I didn't read the books.

Agree on Thyrion and Jaime. The dwarf is amazing, and Jaime is the perfect guy to hate.

I agree with you on both counts.  Both Snow and LStark have gotten more interesting.  I think its an indication of good direction that a lot of characters I wasn't initially excited about are developing into characters I like.  Lots of kids in the movie with significant roles and they are doing a good job with them.

I had hoped to get my wife interested, but its been relatively slow developing and I am not sure I can get her into it. Four episodes in and not a ton has actually happened yet from a TV series perspective.  I think its exceeded my expectations and is really amazing looking, with solid character development.  I dig the story line, so I am in for the series.

Since you have not read the books, I think the only insight you will be lacking that might make it confusing is that the world in these stories moves on a different seasonal pace.  The days are essentially the same during "Summer" i.e. it gets dark at night, light during the day -- although it is never discussed directly in the books to my knowledge.  It is clear that the two main seasons, Winter and Summer, are variable in length and can last for years.  It has never gotten to Winter in the books, but the constant suggestion is that there is no daylight during Winter.  There has also been no direct discussion of magic in the books, but I suspect that magic ebbs and flows on a similarly long frame of reference calendar.  There used to be some a long time ago, but there isn't really any in the current story time.

I also like the Carls Wife - and her dragons to be!

I still think John Snow is not his Starks son.

I believe it was his sisters child!
