Title: New Member! hey everyone!
Post by: Scotch_Tape on November 02, 2008, 11:20:10 PM
Hello ScriptUO.  I'm here to introduce myself and become a part of the community.  Like a lot of you here probably, I'm a game nerd.  I spend most of my time drinking coffee and playing this outdated game or posting about this outdated game.  I play on Alexandria, EasyUO's free shard, and a little on RWR Freeshard.  A current member over here (CStalker) was tired of listening to me talk so he told me I should go read this site because I'm annoying and he really needed a break.  I decided it was a very interesting site and I'm interested in what I've read so far.  (Interface looks pretty interesting)
I tinker around with scripts and enjoy watching them do my bidding.  I script and have a basic understanding of the language.

I work offshore as a Electronics Technician (ROV Tec).  I've been doing it for about 6 months now.  I really enjoy my job.  Other than UO I also enjoy sailing.  I lived on a sailboat up until recently, it was lost during Hurricane Ike.  I hope to be welcomed into the community.  If CStalker says anything about me don't listen to him he's full of crap. (unless it's good, then everything he says is true)

Talk to you guys soon!

Hey Scotch_Tape.  I read your stuff over at EasyUO, but I have to say your first post is severely lacking in the number of gorillas per line.  Other than that, it's great!

I play Alexandria too.  Only has been hard coming back since my first account with all my main characters was deleted.  Even scripting characters up is tiring when you have to gear them again.  Oh well, at least the skills are easy.  Ugh, I just remembered my 7x dragon, wyrm and mare I lost!  *grumbles at CEO*

Welcome!

Well, I have to be careful, there are people out there that don't appriciate gorillas.

If you ever want to nerd it up and go kill skeletons at brit graveyad or whatever look me up.  If you need anything, let me know I'm sure I can throw you some LRC or anything else you need.

Oh man another one has followed me over. I should stop spreading the word of have much i like your program. Well met and all that hubba bubba.

On a side note, If your account at Lexia hits the 1 year mark, it will only be deleted if you dont log in for 1 full year now. You still lose the houses after 90 days , but you get to keep the accounts. Just a reminder for all you who need to log in and refresh their accounts :)

Sure, they do that after they delete my multi-GM characters, pets, and drop my castle.  Good to know, though.  Maybe my bitching got to them finally.  heh.

Perhaps you have run by my house outside the N. Luna gate?

Cool.  I'm working for Oceaneering.  I still have to sit at the unofficial contractor table in the cafateria, so I don't get to small stalk with you guys much.   I'm basicly a monkey with a wrench and Multi-meter right now.  I actually have a story I think I'll share with you.  (never thought I'd be telling a story like this on a forum about video game scripting)

My first hitch I was on a TLP out in the Gulf and it was being towed in to replace some anchor winches after a big storm.  Since we were going to the dock they decided it would be a good time to pull our system off and repair/paint the deck and get a new ROV system installed.  We were pulling wires and dismantling our whole wench system (3 man team) when some 20 something year old engineer came walking up behind me and my supervisor.  My supervisor was 61 and had been in this company, and offshore, for over 20 years.  As you can imagine, any young engineer would have a lot of problems with this guy.  So anyway, this kid was sitting back about 10 foot watching us break these 2 1/2 in. nuts which had 10 years of paint and generally just a pain in the @ss to get off.  So we're stuggling and the supervisor grabs his trusty cheater pipe.  I take a look at him, then I look at the smart kid, then I can't help but start to smile.  My supervisor, who hardly noticed the engineer, went on using the cheater to break the nuts loose.  After about the 3rd one the kid finally get's up the nerve and says, "Hey, you know Cheater Pipes are not allowed on the rig.  You can't use that."  My Supervisor, already annoyed at this general situation, turns around and I swear he was about to punch this kid.  He starts argueing with him saying something along the lines of...  "You don't know *bleep* from Apple butter so go back to your desk you pink fingered desk lizard."  I butt in and say, "You know Andy, he's right.  It said on the pamplet when we got here we can't use these."  Then I turn to him and say, "Do you think you could give us a hand?  We're not able to get these things off without the pipe on it."  So this kid grabs the ratchet and gets into position.  We back up and watch in amusement, we were needed a break anyway.   He's about 6 foot tall, but couldn't have been over 150.  He wasn't able to move it at all obviously.  We just looked at him and shrugged our shoulders.  He gave me back the ratchet and faded off behind us and eventually out of the area.  We ended up using the cheater pipe.  It wasn't the safe thing to do, but regardless it still made me laugh later.

I actually talked to the kid later on that week.  (I call him a kid, but I'm actually only 27.  It makes the story better when I say it like that.) He wasn't half bad of a guy.  I did 4 years in the Marine Corps so seeing this kind of situation again really made me feel comfortable for some reason.  I had never really met anyone who worked Offshore when I wasn't doing it myself.  Once I started working offshore I seem to meet a lot of people who, "Did it for a while."  It's like when you first get a new car, you had never noticed anyone else driving that kind until you started driving it, then everyone and thier brother drives one.

Well, that's all for my story time for now.

Butting in here...

This is kinda why I like doing this site and have at the other sites I've been associated with.  People come here to talk about scripting and such, but discover that there's more to people here than this scripting thing.

And for your story, I got a chuckle from it.  I kept devising other uses for the cheater bar with the green-kid.  Possibly banishing him from being able to use anything like it in the future.  Or just the general bludgeoning to unconsciousness.

.... and back to your off-shore bonding at the regularly scheduled channel....

The staff get to see the "inner workings".  It's pretty complex when you can take away the methods to make the illusion.

I like the gulf.  I like the whole life style too.  I get to go work 7/12's for a month, then come home for a month and screw around.  Oceaneering is definitly a beast, but seriously they really treat thier employees good.  I'm waiting to go back out now, so if I just randomly stop talking it's just that I'm offshore, not that I can't stand this site anymore and CStalker said something horrible to me.

Back to work on a script!

No worries the Scotch_Tape, we all get busy doing things.  Gatecrasher hasn't been here forever now; but he comes from the land of the dead every once in a while.  Just keep your head above the water unless you had Futurama-style gills installed.  Just remember to get the gills up front before donating your lungs; they can't backorder the gills.....  :)

Your tutorial for creating a UI helped me out a lot.  Just thought I'd let you know.  Really helpful.

They actually put me through some pretty good water survival training when I first got on working there.  It's a helo dunk tank that flips over underwater and  you have to open the window and swim out.  I was a swim instructor for the Marine Corps and it was a lot of fun for me, but we had a black guy who gets nervous in the bath tub and he was a trip to watch.  He actually made it though.  He earned his way that's for sure.  I don't know how many gallons that poor guy had to drink that day.

Glad to hear the tutorial helped.  Mainly people have problems with structure and understanding the simple requirements that a UI err-requires (resetting that damn #MENUBUTTON variable for instance).  Once you know what those are, you'll find that the structure of your code won't change much.

P.S.  I still doggy-paddle.  It's sad to see a 41 year old that can only swim that way.  But I'm among the floaters, and not the sinkers.

My employment changed.  Also I haven't talked to CStalker in like 10 years but still don't listen to him unless what he says about me is positive.  RWR doesn't exist anymore.  Started playing again on Alexandria so that's still the same.  I am just one of those old guys who can't leave this stupid video game it seems.  Did pretty good this last hiatus went like 10 years.  Very impressed with the amount of activity of you old timers.  You guys are more hopeless than I am and I can respect that.

Old timer is a good description.  Looking at your last post in 2008 makes you an old timer as well!

I'll see you on Lexia, I play there still.  Script mining at the moment, so the bot is in full control!  Welcome back!
