Title: Is this a Mistake?
Post by: CityKitty on November 06, 2020, 12:31:24 PM
Hey there!

I've always tried to be a valuable member of any forum, careful to be respectful and helpful where possible. My last activity here, a few days ago, was to try to look for or figure out how to write a script to help me with a repair bench. I left no message or comment. Certainly nothing that would ever be offensive. I don't even swear.

I am at a complete loss as to why, when I logged in, I was told I was banned. For the life of me, I cannot possibly imagine whatever I could possibly have done. I love this site and the people I've met here. I've chatted directly with Crisis if you'd like a reference. Please explain to me what happened. I will do whatever necessary to set things right. My login name is CityKitty

(Edited for a type-o)

Out of curiosity, how are you logging in now.  We have some ban filters that are IP-based, so perhaps your IP address is one of those?

I log in on a PC, usually with VPN (Nord forwarding to Seattle. I'm in Canada) but not always so that was the first thing I tried. I cleared my cache and dropped the VPN, restarted the browser (Brave) and logged in. My heart sank. Should I try a different browser?

ACK!! Even though I've been using Brave for quite some time with no issue, I just logged in with Chrome and everything was just fine (I will try to breathe now), I didn't get the message, thank heaven. So, now I need to find out why, on one computer, I can use Brave and on the other I can't. I thought I had been able to send that message as anon but I should have figured it was a mistake when I could post as me!

Same thing has happened to me. I got pretty good at clearing the Firefox cache and being careful to login again.

I will vote that a VPN connection is pretty wise these days - keep the prying eyes out of my personal traffic and the ISP from throttling a connection. Here at home we stream all our TV (no cable subscription!) so our usage is already pretty high. Working from work on video streams adds to that again - so it is better to keep everyone out of my traffic.

Here there are several IP bans - like he said - so definitely do not take it personally.

Some very old forum rule states you can't use a VPN to access here. I believe that rule is outdated and should be revised - personally. So what I do is disconnect from my vpn when I want to connect here. Then back onto my vpn for all my important work.

I am confident someone tried to cause lots of trouble here in the past over various VPN and that is the reason for the rule and the bans - but for sure... take the message with a grain of salt. I have used another browser and connected just fine - but it is a browser I disdain. So you will need to clear the data from your browser to get to reconnect from your favored browser again.

I've almost stopped shaking. I can't tell you how mortified I was to see that! I even tried to find out if I was hacked, you know checking FB, other forums, Twitter, etc. but nothing. Next time I will try to go the calmer route.  ::)

I'm just setting out with the cord cutter thing too. It came about from my passion for home theatre. Nothing huge but I got a Firestick and some nice apks and then got Google TV and a few apks that have be thinking now about just how much cable tv I need. Anyway, that's a conversation for another day.

btw: Any leads on a script that will write a repair deed, then put it in a bag in my backpack? I can add it to the repair myself prolly.

Thanks again!

It probably requires TM to remove the IP based 'ban', if he is willing/decides to go that route.

As for the repair deed, that would not be too difficult.
check for tool
 - make tool if needed (get tool material, tinker tool - a common logic sequence for craft based scripts)
check for blank scroll
use tool
select repair
target blank scroll
rinse and repeat.

I do not have one, but the last time I needed a craft script for something, I modified The Ghost's Factory script. It has a lot of the routines needed to craft something already there, so making a new selection wasn't too hard.

Depending on your scripting experience, it would not be a large project. We can definitely help with questions, testing, push it along...

The reason the old rule of VPNs was because if someone spams from that VPN address, anyone who uses that VPN address will also be hit with a ban on that IP.  Since we try our hardest to keep the site free of unwanted spam posts, we find it best to ban IP addresses from which they come so that the said Bot cannot keep coming.  We have never actively searched for someone using a VPN, because in reality we don't care. It is just that we hate those viagra ads. So for everyone, if you find that you have been banned and you haven't posted anything then it is more than likely that your current IP address is banned :)

No, I don't want you to do that. I design and manage quite a few sites and I use strict rules as well. I would never risk allowing a bad actor to get in. I can use a different browser for now until I figure out what's wrong with the one on the other comp. I can track it down, no fear.

I made just a simple macro for now in the enhanced client that at least makes the scrolls but they don't deposit into a bag, so I need something to move them. I'll fiddle with that thing for a bit and see if I can. We'll see how it goes I guess. Thanks for the offer of help!

As this morning - I did it again... here is how I fix Firefox:
So I was connected on my VPN and clicked my link to join Scriptuo.com... got the "You have been banned" message - even personalized. :)
First, I laughed at myself for doing it again.
Next, I disconnect my VPN.
Then, I go to Firefox Options, Privacy and Security, scroll down to History, Clear History, choose Today (although it may be possible to do it with a different time range - I do not actually care about my history).
Now I can connect again here.

Other browsers that report this may need an adjustment to how this is done.

ARGH! Did all that and nada. This is so dumb. It isn't an addon either. Both browsers (one on each comp) are configured the same and on sync as well so whatever is on one, is on all of them. I will keep hunting. It's likely some little, random thing that will just make me crazy hehe

How funny that happened to you just when we had been talking about it!

On Firefox (if that is what you are trying to connect with), the "Today" time period may be the date since midnight or 24 hours, but for certain no longer than that. You may need to go back further to delete the history to allow you to reconnect. Your original post description was early yesterday morning... So you will need to get to a period earlier than that to get rid of that saved data.

Back when I was hosting the site, I had set up all kinds of IP filters including some in Apache.  Those are all gone now and really the only filters left that I know about are a few block IP bans.  But those won't be intermittant, if you're in the block, you just won't be able to connect. I don't think Tidus has done anything like that; all our annoying users from that time have all been sent to the Isle of Misfit Dutchbags.

We don't care if you connect using a VPN any longer.  I do myself, and really try to surf using one 7/24 now.  Tidus is the rule maker now, so it's ultimately up to him for those kinds of things.

Using Brave which is really just Chrome but less nosey. That makes it even more interesting that I get blocked in Brave but not Chrome. I cleared all the cache, history and all, but still no luck. I need to find the user data file and see what's in there. I'll bet that's where the glitch is. Anyway, I'll find it! Thanks for all the tips!

There are always new bad actors and you have to stay on top if it. I wouldn't worry about this from your end. I'm pretty sure the error is in the browser. I'll keep tracking it down.
