Off Topic / Re: Favorite Movies
« on: June 13, 2009, 03:49:12 AM »
I know this is supposed to be a short post of our list of Top 5 Movies, but I've proven I'm a long-winded poster, haven't I?  I just can't think of what my "Top 5 Movies" are.  For me, it's like an impossible task to name the top 5 movies because I love so many, I've seen so many, I've owned so many (and in so many different formats: Film, VHS, Betamax, LaserDisc, VCD, DVD, Blu-ray and now any number of different digital files).  But even if I were to break it down into categories like Action, Drama, Mystery, Thriller, SciFi, Comedy, etc I still don't know what I'd name.

So, let's say for instance, we start with my top 5 favorite Science Fiction movies as of this writing:

The Matrix
Serenity
Fifth Element
Donnie Darko
Star Trek

However that's my list of Top 5 SciFi movies right now in 2009.  But if you asked me the same question 15 years ago in 1994 my list may have been:

Terminator 2: Judgment Day
Back To The Future
Blade Runner
Aliens
The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai

Now let's double the years back... had you asked me 30 years ago in 1979, you'd probably hear a list more like:

Close Encounters of The Third Kind
Star Wars
Planet Of The Apes
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
Logan's Run

Had you asked me when finishing up high school in 1956 and my list may have been roughly:

20,000 Leagues Under The Sea
Creature From The Black Lagoon
War Of The Worlds
Forbidden Planet
The Day The Earth Stood Still

So to take all those experiences over all those years watching all those movies and to try to name my Top 5 SciFi movies is a hard task, let alone my Top 5 Movies.  But not using categories, not worrying about what year it was made and not considering anything other than "I simply love that movie" and I need to name my top 5 movies right now...

Raiders Of The Lost Ark
Lord Of The Rings (I consider all three of the "Extended Editions" together to be one single 14 hour movie)
In Bruges
Brazil
Serenity or Fifth Element (I can not figure out which I like more, so they both go on the list - tied)

So... after considering that top 5 list for only a moment or two, I can't help but feel odd not including: Seven Samurai, The Usual Suspects, Citizen Kane, Sin City, The Good, The Bad & The Ugly, Goodfellas, The Sixth Sense, Psycho, Jaws, Full Metal Jacket, To Kill A Mockingbird, Monty Python And The Holy Grail, The Shining, On The Waterfront, The Wild Bunch, Scream, Pulp Fiction, North By Northwest, The Godfather, V For Vendetta, The Princess Bride, Trainspotting, Chinatown, Pitch Black, Casablanca, Singin' In The Rain, Rocky, Midnight Run, Batman, Donnie Darko, Running Scared...

TrailMyx, thank you for putting systray on the todo list.  At the risk of sounding greedy with requests...

I've seen programs that Khameleon is talking about and it is a nice functionality, in my opinion.  If that's an easy add, being able to turn that on and off in the options menu would be great.

Also in terms of adding systray functionality - I saw another idea I liked in a program I can't think of right now.  In the options menu it allowed the user to minimize to systray, minimize to both the systray and the taskbar or not minimize to systray at all.  I liked having all three options, depending on what I was doing.

As far the ScriptUO skins go... my favorite text editor right now NotePad++ which has a classic looking, simple tabbed layout for it's interface.  Do you think adding a skin to ScriptUO that looks like that would be easy to do?

One last question about the interface.  Do you think that having a user defined color set will be coming sooner than later?

I'm not at all sure how much input you want from all the users about features and functionality for ScriptUO, but I've just found that developing is easier when the environment is customized to the programmer's personal preference.

I understand 100% the importance of being inspired in a project to want to work on it, so no need to explain that any further. :)

Sorry TrailMyx, I wasn't asking about the toolbar in ScriptUO that is locked up at the top of the interface.  I typed "toolbar" instead of "systray" for reasons that are beyond me.  I'm wondering if you can add the feature to minimize ScriptUO to the system tray.  I really programs that offer that option and was hoping you'd be able to add it to ScriptUO when you feel inspired.  Thanks!

ScriptUO Questions and Answers / ScriptUO Skin & Toolbar Minimizing
« on: June 12, 2009, 04:39:32 PM »
Two quick questions.

First one is about ScriptUO's skin... is there a simple way to change it?  We all have our own tastes for setting up the look and feel of a program or our desktop or whatever.  I prefer an older style look - I'm not sure how I'd describe it but but I like a simple and plain interface.  This has zero impact on my ability to make scripts, I'm just curious.

The second question, which I believe may be directed specifically at TrailMyx since he's the sole coder of the program, is it at all possible to add the ability to minimize ScriptUO to the toolbar?  I know there a thirdparty programs that help with this sort of thing for programs that don't support it internally, but I was wondering if that would be an option you'd be able to add or even want to add in the nearish future?

Excellent info, thanks guys for all that.  I agree - clearly for development purposes the ScriptUO environment is the one to go with.  I did what you suggested Cerveza and loaded a large script into both and attempted to make changes in both programs.  As you and 12TimesOver explained, ScriptUO was certainly the more powerful tool to use.  While I'm new to scripting UO stuff, I have done some programming before.  Nothing fancy, but enough to know I'm not that good at it.  And not being very good at coding, one of my "bad" habits is to make a single change to a line of code and re-run the program.  Then I will make another change and re-run the program.  And I do this over and over for hours.  This is a slow way to develop, but it helps me understand exactly what every change is doing and what effect it is having.   I need to write a small piece of code, watch it run and then make changes from what I saw happen.  I'm just not very good at looking at large potions of code and knowing in my head what will happen.  I'm not certain if that makes sense to a more advanced programmer, but that's my manner of software development.  Now these practices of mine makes for a slight problem with ScriptUO.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  Shall I run both programs at once, develop in ScriptUO and save the code, switch to EasyUO, reload the code and run it?  Or better yet, how does everyone else develop scripts using these two programs?  What are your techniques?

I have to agree, from my current understanding of things, it would seem the only kind of script I've have a problem with would be one that was developed to somehow hurt or exploit another player.  I have no idea what a "skill timer avoidance bugs" is, but if it's something that will allow my animal taming to go up more than .1 every 24 hours I'm interested in it so, please do explain that to me! :)  But seriously, I'm here posting these messages and learning how to script to enhance my own personal gaming experience with UO.  I believe, though I could be wrong on this, that running a script in EasyUO while being logged into any of the OSI shards is against the rules and can get my account banned or my character tossed in jail for 24 hours or some other repercussion I'm not aware of.  Honestly, as long as I'm in no way attempting to affect the gameplay of any other player, I am very confused why OSI cares what I do with my time online.

Cerveza, those guides you pointed me to were exactly what I needed to get a good start on things.  Thanks for taking the time to work on them and giving new scripters like me a solid foundation for learning this stuff.

My father of 99 years insists on calling me "kid" to this day.  The way he tells it, I "became" a kid the moment I saw Space Invaders in 1978.  I didn't even know what a video game was back then, hadn't heard of such a thing in my life.  But from that day (that very MOMENT) until now I've been playing video games of all kinds.  But let's not lie about the lies... if we meet in-game where attitude and image are paramount - be it at a Feluccia champ spawn in UO or a few quick rounds of Halo 3, I'll be telling you I'm 36 and just got back from Rage Against The Machine concert.  Haha!

ScriptUO Questions and Answers / New User Stuff
« on: June 11, 2009, 05:06:35 AM »
Hey all...

I'm rather new to this whole scripting scene.  Since I've been away from UO for so many years, it feels very much like I'm new to the game as well.  In the last week or so of poking around the net and doing my best to find UO related sites development sites, there seem to be only a few utilities being actively developed for OSI shards these days, EasyUO, ScriptUO and Razor.  While I believe that UOAssist is still available, their website suggests that they haven't added many features recently or even really updated their website.  I was sad to find UOAutoMap no longer supported and a struggle to barely get working.  Other than those few programs, I'm not seeing a lot of other stuff out there.  ScriptUO seems to be one of the few active projects - are there others that I didn't mention that I should be made aware of that will help me not only with UO, but, more specifically with developing scripts in ScriptUO?  Companion tools and such?

I came to this website looking to for a place to learn how to code and to actually create some scripts that would be not only helpful to myself, but to others as well.  I have been tossing a number of ideas around and I've come to find some of those ideas have been attempted and put online at the EasyUO's and the ScriptUO websites.  In some cases the scripts are better than anything I had even begun to consider.  Other cases I have been left completely disappointed.  With all that mind, I've got a few quick questions.  And while I did use the search button as suggested to me, still, I apologize in advance if these questions have been covered in other posts.

It is my understanding that ScriptUO is currently not a replacement for EasyUO, but is a functioning development environment for scripts that can run in EasyUO.  Someone can code scripts in ScriptUO, save them and run them in EasyUO and that's it.  I've played with both of these programs for only a little while, so I would greatly appreciate it if someone could explain a few reasons why I'd choose one piece of software over the other to begin developing my projects.  Or perhaps explain when it is best to use which piece of software during the development process.  Remember, I'm not only new to the UO scripting scene, I'm new to scripting in general.  Is one better suited to a new developer than the other?  Does one program have more features geared towards someone who has very little knowledge of the processes involved?

Another question I have is that I see a number of scripts on this site that run in EasyUO but do not seem to be available on the EasyUO website.  I'm curious why this is.  If I write a script I feel is good enough to release, how should I be choosing which website to release it on?  Are these scripts not accepted on the EasyUO website for a reason?  Or were they simply not submitted to the site?  Does ScriptUO.com only host certain types of scripts?

As I've mentioned, while I've done some scripting and programming in my life, I'm still very new and I don't have an innate understanding of many coding concepts.  Are there specific tutorials, guides, discussion groups or snippets of code directed towards a person like me to get started?  A "Hello World" type example leading into a examples of some of the other basics?  I've seen a few things on both websites here and there, but I've not stumbled across a detailed beginner's guide to creating a functioning script.  Or perhaps there is and I just didn't see it.

Thank you in advance for any help that is offered.

Hey again and thanks for the kind welcome to the site.

Toptwo, I'm not THAT old.  Well, I don't think 71 is that old, in my opinion.

Masscre, I play on LS (as stated in my intro post) and I've no clue as to what I could possibly put in to ScriptUO, I think what I'm looking to get out of it is a better understanding of scripting.

I think I should post my questions about ScriptUO in the proper forum, so off I go...

Hello all.

I'm an older player returning to UO after 8 years away.  I play mostly on the LS shard as mage, tamer and crafter.  I just got back into UO a few months ago and people on LS told me about this site and ScriptUO as well as other utilities available on the net.  I'm very interested in what 3rd party development is doing in relation to the game.  I've never been very good at coding/scripting/programming but have always wanted to be.  I hope this site will be of help in that area.  Thanks much for putting so much time and effort into an excellent site.
