Triploid Trout

A 48 pound triploid rainbow trout was caught in Canada's Lake Diefenbaker. The fish was one of 500,000 that were accidentally released from fish pens 9 years ago.

Triploids are genetically altered to have three sets of chromosomes, making them sterile and channeling energies normally spent reproducing towards growth. They get very large, very quickly compared to normal rainbow trout.

The question is... should these "trips" be considered rainbows in regards to the record?

My view is that these Triploids have been genetically altered. They are NO LONGER rainbow trout, but an engineered sup species.

Selective breeding is different. Yes it is manipulating the genetics of a species, but it follows within the rules of natural selection. Actually modifying the genetics of an animal/fish/bird is changing it on a whole different scale (heh).

Only interested in this because I'm a r/l fisherman, not a *play* one

I agree 100%. Since they are sterilized right after egg fertilazation then they are "man produced" in my eyes. Also, I might be wrong on this but I believe it is also made sure that they get "the proper food, at the proper time" to help in larger and speedier growth.

Trips should have their own catagory..I dont consider them wild trout.

WELL I only fish to have something to cook and eat.  That is the sport of it to me and to our ancestors. But i am in technical terms in agreement with you Cerveza.  There were originally a rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) but being as now they have been changed and can not reproduce for the same reason they could be considered a sub species or just a joke.  Becasue now that they can not reproduce they should not even be considered anything but bait IMHO.

people with down syndrom have 3 chromosomes (#21 usually) and they are not their own species. Same with Turner Syndrome and so forth.

Test Tube Babies are Sterile?
I had no idea.
And only males with DS are sterile except in extremely rare instances. Females with DS are not typically sterile.
But of course Turner Syndrome patients are all sterile females....
But I still had no idea about test tube babies.
Unless it's a play on words about the test tubes being Sterile.......now that is funny I don't care who you are.

I woulnt say they are thier own species.  But its equally fair to say they should not be counted towards any records.

Just like in sports if you dope a man up with drugs he can run faster.. but for judging you need to compare EQUALS.. the Gen modded Trout is not Equal it has been designed for size.  Until we start having the Drug Enhanced Olympics i think the gen modded trout should just be used as food as they were designed for, and people need to stop accidentally releasing them..
