The only thing holding that system back is its graphics card. Also, not sure what motherboard is has because they never specify. If it's a decent motherboard, you could upgrade the graphics card, or add a second one in (if it has 2 PCIe x16 slots). Other than that, a pretty decent system. If you wanted to build it yourself you could probably do it for about $850.

One reviewer says: "The motherboard is MSI, the ram is Crucial(I think), and the video card that came with it is ASUS."  Same guy and another reviewer suggested upgrading the Vid card and power supply and dropping in a few fans.

Any recommendation on the vid card?

How much RAM does it have?  I didn't see this.  But that video card just needs to be immediately replaced.

You get great bang for the buck with the GeForce GTS-250.  I might get one since they are $164.99 + $10 rebate.  But start there, you can get better/worse.

I use EVGA cards since their support is absolutely great!  I've had my share of problems, but they are always responsive and get my new card back to me very quickly.

Sounds like a plan. Going to pull the trigger on the system today and I will order the card at the same time.

The price seems a little high to me also i just glanced around at some similar items just briefly and if you build the system your self you can get it for 700 to 850 depending what brand names you want and if you can wait for a mail in rebate here and there.

http://www.evga.com/products/moreinfo.asp?pn=512-P3-1150-TR

Looks like 134.99 with a $15 rebate on the 512.  or

http://www.evga.com/products/moreInfo.asp?pn=01G-P3-1156-TR&family=Geforce%20200%20Series%20Family

$164.99 with $10 rebate on the 1M superclocked version.

Either require me to upgrade the power supply. Guess the reviewers knew what they were talking about.

So to really complete the system I would be spending $1200:

$165 on a vid card

$50 to $75 for an upgraded PS.

I like that the builder provides lifetime support since I am no professional system builder

Massacre,

Do you see a similar "close to ready" system that I could buy assembled that you think is a better deal. I don't mind changing out a card or a power supply, but I think its worth $150 to have someone else put it together for me...

This system includes the Windows with an upgrade to 7, but not other software to speak of.

I am open to suggestions, this just came closest to being something I could do in my price range of about $1,200 for this machine.

Ya, it seems to me to be a shame to put such a great CPU/memory combination with a wimpy PS/GPU.
Title: Re: Looking for Feedback on This System From Costco
Post by: Paulonius on August 12, 2009, 01:42:43 PM
I called the builder who supplies Costco and had a guy there price out a system without the weak PS and GPU. He said they use better parts than they are selling to their secondary markets.  He priced it at $1,398 delivered with TM's card, a 600W PS and an optical drive that will read Blue Ray.

Now this thing is climbing a little out of the price point I was hoping to keep. I wonder if I would be better off finding a local system builder to put something together for me.  Probably cheaper than either of these options...

Most pre built systems always do this.  They build you a nice machine but skimp on something they think the average user will not notice.  Video for example.  The average user does not know the difference of one or another GPU.  They are just looking to see how much memory the Video card has and that is all they know or understand.  And know I dont know of any prebuilt systems for this price listed.  Cerveza has listed my build your own computer systems web sites on this site.  They are all nice systems just depends on the items on your wish list :P . There is not really any science to building a system.  The basics are get a good motherboard for what you intend to use it for.  Make sure the CPU you buy fits the motherboard foot print and make sure the memory fits the motherboard foot print also and is not limiting the ability of the processor or bus. Get a 550 and maybe a 650 watt PS but one that has a stable and dependable output. The rest of the items are mostly interchangable.  I used to build systems back until 2007 when i got a new position where i work and did not have enough time anymore for the Computer shop and closed it then. If you prefer to go with a prebuilt system thats your choice, but if you want to try it yourself i am open for questions and will be your guide.

That's why I always build my own.  It's worth a little elbow grease to get it installed and configured.  Don't skimp on the power supply; buy a good one from a good manufacturer.

yea my honest advice is to build it yourself. Your immediate thought may be "OMG there's no way I can do that" but I assure you that is far from the truth. If the average public knew how easy it was to build a computer yourself, all the major manufacturer's would be out of business. There are plenty of people on this site who would gladly help you build it from start to finish (from ordering parts to piece it together to installing all the software you may need), myself included. I would even off phone support if needed! hehe

If I get a few minutes here, I'll put together of a list of parts and some suggestions!

Ok so it took me about 2 seconds to find this:

Barebones System (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5013757&CatId=4149)
That system has:
Nice MSI motherboard
Intel i7 920 Processor
12GB DDR3 RAM (good stuff too!)
1TB Hitachi HD
EVGA GeForce 9800 GTX Video Card
750-Watt PS
Slick looking case (decent amount of fan slots too!)

When you purchase these "barebones kits" from Tiger Direct, you're technically purchasing each piece separately, it's just adding them all together in your cart. So you can easily swap out the 9800GTX for a 250 or 260 series graphics card.

P.S. That motherboard is sick:
8 x USB ports
2 x Gigabit Ethernet
Firewire
eSATA
Digital Optical Audio
and...it supports up to 24GB of RAM hehehe!

I've honestly never used on MSI board before (not cuz I avoid them, just cuz I haven't). I can vouch for ASUS and XFX (my current one). MSI makes really nice netbooks, but I honestly haven't used many of their other products so I don't want to say one way or another on anything. As for the OS's. Windows 7 will be fairly cheap. Also, if someone is really desperate, I can send them a copy of pretty much any OS they want! I get them free through MSDN Academic Alliance. Technically I'm the only one "allowed" to use them, but it's not like anyone ever checks that *bleep*. They give you a legit key and then you download the iso. So I can technically email you the file and the key!

ASUS prolly makes the best motherboards, but MSI makes some damn good models also just check the motherboard forums for info and a background check of the model you are interested in before you purchase.  All manufactures have made a lemon or 2 in the path to try to be the best MB manufacturers.  I have had around 8 diff asus MB's and around 6 diff msi MB's and have never had one problem with them. Also BIOStar has upped the anti on thier MB division and is pumping out some very nice MB's at lower prices than competition.

I am completely satisfied with my XFX MB that I currently have (750 series chipset). Nice layout with good spacing for my gigantic fan. (See image below). I also have an XFX 9600 in this computer. Looking to upgrade to a 250 or 260 myself. I'll run my 9600 as a secondary (not SLI or Xfire'd or anything like that) because I want to support my max of 5 monitors (currently only have 2, but have a 3rd waiting). My motherboard combined with my single graphics card can support 5 monitors (7 with a secondary graphics card), but I think that's just a wee bit too much!! Hehe!

Alright, you have convinced me Maddog I am going to order a kit.  I will run it past you before I pull the trigger to make sure you think its kosher...

I suspect that I may end up with an expensive wind chime, but I will give it a go...

Yahoo another person gives the computer DIY a try.  It really simple and just get the latest driver for each device. Dont even use the drivers they send you with the devices go straight to the manufactures website and get the most recent ones and install them in your system and you should be top notch.

It's really easy Paul.  Not like 15 years ago... haha  Plug and play has almost come full circle.  It's a snap, like building a car with legos literally. :)  Just read the instructions. haha  Anything that crops up will just be optimizing I'm sure and we can all help with that once you get it up and running.

Yes that's a 120mm in the back. There is also one in the front underneath the drive bays that blows across my 4 HD's!

That is not dust. It is merely a warp in the time-space continuum  that happened to be caught by my ultra-fast digital camera!

Awesome! I love wind chimes! Let me know if you need an OS. Vista 64-bit is probably your best bet for now (I use Windows XP 64-bit and it's a pain most of the time). And you can always upgrade to Windows 7 when it comes out then! (should only be about $100-150 to upgrade from what I've heard). Just keep me updated and don't hesitate to ask for help!

Oh that's priceless!  I have the same problem, but my issue is 1000000000x worse since I never dust.  If you hear that the world is starting to fall into a massive singularity, you'll know it started in W. Escondido, CA.

Only problem is that's it's not 64-bit so he's wasting 8GB of RAM! Whereas I can send him a copy and he can use it for free!

That's a lot of power supply, probably more than you need but it will work!

Ok, so vid card is an optional upgrade.
What about fans?
Thermal paste?

Think absolute ignorant as your starting point and what you want on hand in a pile that when you are done you have a computer that works...

My loosely applicable skills: I can tune a carborator engine and build anything from wood.

No the Video card is a MUST buy, the NIC's (Network Interface Card) are on board (dual 10/100/1000).

CPU fan typically comes with the CPU. Other cooling fans typically come with the case and power supply. I notice that case is well decked out.

Even with a sweet video card 750 watts is probably overkill but it doesn't matter a whole lot anyway - this is a bundle deal!

Add a video card, an OS, and your input devices and you should be good to go.

Graphics card required, Check.

I read more about the motherboard and it has Lan connections built in, so check that off too.  Do I care that the only two review say the motherboard is a piece of crap?

Input output? -- Does that mean mouse and keyboard?

Do I need some paste for when I attach the CPU?

Do I need the static mat?
Title: Re: Looking for Feedback on This System From Costco
Post by: 12TimesOver on December 01, 2009, 11:32:53 AM
When I said NIC that equals LAN ;)

I would care about the reviews but it does depend on why they say it's crap. Typically these bundle deals at places like Tiger will be loaded with components that the vendor wants to get rid of and a bundle makes them more attractive because of the pricing.

Input - yep, mouse and keyboard is all I meant there.

Paste will likely come with the CPU, if not go down to Radio Shack and get some.

That would be a negative on the static mat or straps or any other gimmic. Just don't run around rubbing your stocking feet on the carpets before you pull the CPU out of the box!! ;)

I always just touch the computer case before I handle any of the other stuff or open any of the packages. That should remove any static on you. Once you get the stuff installed don't use this method touch a door know or window casing.
