Yeah, I know. Not a very exciting template conversation but it is one that is near and dear to my heart.
There was a time in my UO past when I would typically assign a single character slot on whatever shard I played the role of "Mule". Typically this character ended up being a mismatch of resource gathering and crafting skills with enough Magery to "get around" squeezed in there somewhere. The template was cramped but, looking back on it, made sense based on what was valuable at the time.
As time has moved on it has become increasingly difficult to manage a single "Mule" character and I started to change the way I think about the process, mostly due to the time I spent on Siege Perilous where my two accounts provided very little, precious "skill real estate". I decided that to be an effective Mule one should really choose either the "Resource Gatherer" or the "Crafter/Quester" role for a given character.
The difference is pretty straightforward, a Resource Gatherer is a character designed to provide every resource in the game that a Crafter/Quester might need whereby the Crafter/Quester would be devoted to burning resources up in Heartwood, BOD's, or simply creating the armor, weapons, jewelry, add-ons, etc my other characters need.
My template's currently go something like:
Crafter/Quester
120 Tailor
120 Blacksmith
100 Arms Lore
100 Tinkering
100 Carpentry
100 Fletching
80 Magery
This character should be able to do all Heartwood quests, collect and fill BOD's and craft anything that may be needed.
Resource Gatherer
110 Magery
110 Med
100 Mining
100 Lumberjack
100 Fishing
100 Alchemy
100 Cooking
This character can gather all potential resources including most/all leather types. Alchemy and Cooking can be viewed as either Craft or Resource, I view consumables as resources.
So what do you do? Any better ideas or missing components? Anyone else enjoy this type of template discussion?

Personally, I'd pitch cooking for tinkering for the resource gatherer. But that's just me.
-
Hi,
I have two almost identical chars for my Gather/Crafting needs,
I think the real trouble with the crafters template will start with the
upcomming new crafting skill.
cu
-
I would also pitch the cooking for tinker simply to ensure that I always have whatever tools are necessary for the resource gathering.
-
Ah right, I forgot about Tinkering. I do have 80 tink on my new one. I think I'll flip Tinkering and Cooking between the two.

I think that works quite well.
-
You could drop Magery on the resource gatherer and go with 65 Chivalry for sacred journy. That would leave enough tinkering to make shovels and such.
-
I did think of that actually, could work. I am also interested in being able to drop two EV's, Invis, and spam MindBlast as needed though which is why I squeezed the Magery/Med in there.

and maybeit is a little expansive to fill up the TP for mining and lumberjacking ....

Resource Gatherer
110 Magery
110 Med
100 Mining
100 Lumberjack
100 Fishing
100 Alchemy
100 Cooking
I am curious, why the fishing and the cooking?
Having Never played SP is it THAT important to have offensive stuff on a reasorce gatherer??
I think I would try and combine my gatherer/crafter into one char. Since u only have 2 chars on SP (Or get another account) :)
120 Smith
120 Tailor
95 Miner (use miners gloves +5)
100 Arms Lore
95 Lumberjacking (use melisande's hatchet +5)
100 Carpenter
70 Tinker
20 magery (and use recall scrolls)
This wont give you any alchemy..but you can buy pots with all the money you make from getting quest stuff
-
I'm not thinking about this as an SP thing, SP taught me how to think of the roles a little differently is all. I do this on all shards I play now.
Fishing = White Pearls, etc
Cooking = Why not, it's a crafting/resource skill
Magery/Med = Leather gathering
The point is to cover all crafting with one char and provide all resources with another char. Not necessarily something you would do unless you truly enjoy character design as much as I do ;)

I have never created a resource gatherer without tinkering. Mining simply requires it. It's not as desperate now that the dependency for tinkering has been broken because you can use lumberjacking for creating boards (with axe). But I guess with one soulstone, you can swap the two out (cooking/tinkering).
-
well, I guess I would be pretty close to what you have for resource gathering.
110 Magery
110 Eval
110 Med
100 Fishing
100 Alchemy
95 Mining (+ gloves +5 to make 100)
95 Lumberjack (plus Mel's hatchet to make 100)
-----
For the Crafter
120 Smith
120 Tailor
100 Arms lore
100 Tinker
100 Carp
100 Fletching
80 for chiv or magery to get around
EDIT..............
the one thing to bear in mind though is we might have to drop off a skill on our crafter to be able to add Imbue/unravel...I have not read enough about these yet but I believe at least one of em is a new skill...yes?? Either that, or we are all gonna hafta make Gargoyles :)
-
don't forget about the additional Skill Item ID is used with the skill Imbuing.
so your gonna have to swap out ItemID with Arms Lore?
-
How many of you have 100 Item ID on a soulstone right now... huh? Huh?
Yep, ole Cerveza does :)
-
you can add me to that list...I do I do

its not on a soul stone its already on my character that's gonna pick up Imbuing ;P
-
Had to check my crafter... almost same.
120 Tailor
120 Smith
100 Carpentry
100 Tinkering
100 Arms Lore
100 Fletching
65 Chivalry
15 Music
I put on +30 Music to craft exceptional instruments.
-
I am leaving my item ID stoned til the last minute..I havent been able to find anything that says it will be required...have you guys read that, or do you have a little "inside info" ?

I have NO CLUE why I never thought about that...:::slapping head::::
I have been BUYING all my instruments...dammit!
-
speaking of Imbuing, I know we have a few people her that have the Beta access.
has anyone started on a script or let us in on how it will be trainned so we can add it to one of the Muliti skill Training Scripts.
-
I do as well, of course I have 100 soulstones on my main acct on Siege. I have every skill worked then several skills have different levels based on templates (example. 90 tact, 100 tact, 120 tact) then enough to change templates 6 times a day.
-
oh ... I thought I am lucky 8) .. I have 3 Soulstones ... :'(
-
LOL Rana, I'm with you there!! I think I have 6 on my non-SP chars.
Keep in mind though that SS's on Siege are A LOT cheaper and there was a time where you could trade-in anniversary items there for SS's.
100 is still some damn admirable dedication though!! :P
XII
-
lol, I didn't even know there were that many skills to be had.
-
There isnt, but, if your putting in different intensities of many of the skills, you could easily use 100.
Hell I peel like a piker now, I have 4 SS and like 25 Frags....I would LOVE to have more SS's but can't bring myself to pay 25M each for em, or to buy em from EA. I would love to see them do something to bring more frags back though.
I got all my frags after I restarted the game, they were expensive then, but cheap now in retrospect. I paid like 250k each for them...now they are selling for 700-1M each on sonoma...had I known they wernt going to be back in all this time I would have bought every one on the shard at 250k each.
-
OMG 25 mil each!!! They are only 2 mil each on siege. Someday someone will figure out the exchange rate and come to siege. I am very surprised more prodo people don't farm on siege and Xshard it over at the going 1/10. It doesn't take much to get 1 mil farmed up round here.
-
yep, do a search on Finduo.com right now and you will see full stones selling from 8Mil to 25Mil. 8 mil on Atl right now, and 25M on sonoma. If I could buy em for 8 mil each I probably would grab some, but on sonoma where I am I have never seen one for less then 22M.
-
No character transfers to or from Siege. That's what keeps Siege in check more than the other shards.
Transfers are part of what killed the UO economy.
Man, I remember the first round of fragments when I had only the characters I played on various shards. Immediately afterward I started creating base characters EVERYWHERE! When the next time came that we got Frags I spent hours logging into all of my chars across all shards and two accounts.
Shortly afterward I found a vendor on Drach that was selling them for 50k, I started buying but every time I bought one there was another beneath it. I bought 48 of them before the vendor was empty!!
But to get back to the topic, thanks much all for the discussion. I'm off and running having made a slight change to my resource gatherer.
