Title: Screenshots from RIFT
Post by: TrailMyx on February 05, 2011, 11:49:17 AM
Probably not supposed to be posting these, but alas I don't listen very well.  Beautiful looking game so far.

But what do you have to do in game? Level?

Ya, WoWish.  However, I kinda like the way things are done in this.  It's quite different than some of the other MMRPG.  I'm still wrapping my head around it, so I'll give move feedback as I play more (only been playing for about 30 minutes so far.)

Gaining in levels.  First glimps of a rift with tentacles.

The graphics seem pretty nice, but if the world has limitations that is always what brings me back to uo :)

The rift instance encounters are kinda fun.  This one popped up right in the middle of the magic users school.  It's easy to jump into the encounter and participate.

have really been considering picking this up i just hate to lvl up and put all the time in and find out pvp is a real drag ya know

Unfortunately, I'm not a PvP person so I can't give you any advise.  I'm stilll playing this however; it's pretty good.  People claim it's a WoW rip-off, but they haven't played it much then.

just by what ive read and seen on youtube its definately not a wow rip-off and i'm not the one so quick to judge something i havent played. its just i pretty much play anything for the pvp aspect of it but i guess a little bit of new is always refreshing at least for a while so i think i'll give it a go

I'd like to hear more about what UOer's think about this game. My buddy who is a pretty avid gamer loves it and has been playing the hell out of it, but we disagree on games somewhat often.

I've been thinking about checking Rift out myself. The screenshots do look like a less polished WoW but if you guys are saying they are nothing alike I'll certainly bite.

Retnuh, did/do you think the pvp in WoW is a drag? If so, I'm just curious what about it you don't like. I have characters I'm leveling exclusively in the battlegrounds and I am enjoying the hell out of it but it does get redundant, kind of like playing TFC. I was going to try out a pvp server to see how I like that.

Hmm, I think they are more polished.  The graphics engine is much better in Rift (same as Warhammer).  In order to do the quests, I haven't had to look at sites like WoWHead, all the necessary hints are built into the UI.  Those kinds of refinements go on and on.  I can't believe this is a "new" game.  The level of polish and stability is amazing to me.

If you play Rift just gently, you'll think, "man, this is a total WoW rip."  However, it takes a bit of time to see how they are so different.  I asked that question to my WoW God-Friend, and he definitively stated they two only look similar.  If you stop and think a bit about it, WoW is a rip of EQ2 which was a rip of DAoC which was a rip of EQ1 which was a rip of UO. Frankly, Rift is a great blending of the best parts of all the games so far.  You just have to give it 20 levels to start really seeing the differences clearly.

My friends are having a ball in the PvP area; they are actually dragging me into it tonight.  Will be the first time I've PvPed in a 1st person MMORPG.  This should be interesting...

To be honest, I'm still playing PvE.   Still wanting to get around to it.

I played it and loved it in the beginning.  I got tired of the almost seemingless end of quests that needed to be completed in order to move to the next area.  It's not a bad story line and the Rifts are rather unique.  I like that they can get really nasty if people aren't there to take care of them.

If anyone is thinking about giving Rift a try, use this link so I can get a referral out of it.  They are bringing out solo and duo dungeons in the next patch, and as a solo player I can't be more happy!

Dunno, probably not.  I've consistently played since beta.  I still kinda like it and one of these days I'll play with a guild to see what the end-game stuff is all about.

No dice TM.. I was browsing around on MMORPG.com and ended up watching a video on Rift with a Mage.  Thought to myself... "Self.. You didn't make a mage."  So.. I opened the account and used the link you provided.  Once I got into the account it said that the code provided is only for NEW accounts.  Oh Well.

I will jump into the game tonight again to check things out under a new character.  Everything is just smoke and mirrors at this point until SWTOR is released:)

Bummer, well thanks for checking.  I'm actually having fun with my mage.  They are so much easier to play than my priest.  DPS is mucho grande!

Finally one of these MMORPGs is finding a way to adjust to my play style.  I love playing solo, or with another friend, but never get to really experience the end-game content due to my xenophobia.

With the next patch, they will open 1 and 2 man dungeon instances.  I can't be more happy with this news!

Yea... I love that update myself.  I opened my account and have been enjoying the mage so far.  Slowly working up and playing UO at the same time.  I think I am level 18 or 19 at the moment.

Yes, I've loved my Mage so far too.  Finally made it to 50th.  Nearly pure Necro/Pyro.  Playing my rogue/ranger/marksman at the moment since the MOBs I hate the most are the archers.  Now I get to give as good as I get.

I'm up to my 3rd 50th level character.  So far I have a cleric, mage and rogue.  Haven't been able to get into my warrior yet.

The latest addition to the game is Ember Isle which is a very large and free expansion.  I was bored with the level 50 end game, but they added several systems that let you expand and evolve your character beyond level 50.  Overall, I really like the new expansion.  The island has several "Onslaught" areas that must be defended by groups or also can be soloed.  If an area is defended by many players, the invasion automatically boosts the onslaught to make it more challenging.  Also the world events weave themselves into these areas which makes it kinda fun.

Now if they will add some more soloable dungeons....

I'm horrible when it comes to doing group things.  I've always been a loner in all these MM games.  I might as well be playing Diablo..  lol.

Anyhow, I joined a guild for the first time since I started Rift; it's time for some dungeons finally.  My gear sucks and I need to grow it.  ;)

Still playing and enjoying this game.

I'm just mad because they broke the only method to macro fish.  (shhh, I wrote my own that works better than the well known one.. don't tell anyone)  heh

I played Rift for a bit.  It felt (I know you already addressed this in the thread) a bit to WoWish for me.  I never liked nor got much into WoW.  I don't like the idea of leveling up and grinding instances for gear.  I LOVED the skill tree though.  That was fun- Building a DPS Chloro or a Complete Healing Chloro, etc..  I had high levels of all characters when I quit.  In honesty-I made no friends, It's not like UO.  I make friends all the time in UO... I feel the player base in Rift is full of trash talking kids for the most part and very few people actually talked to me.  I also wish there was more to the crafting side of Rift- Maybe it's changed in the last 6 months, I don't know, but Crafting felt like it was just an added feature tossed in to appease the notion of crafting as opposed to a good functional part of the game.

Really it depends on getting a good a mature guild.  The guild I'm in now is fairly large and the people are all super nice.  Most of us are older so that maturity level is quite noticeable.

Yes, the skill tree is really great feature of Rift.  You can totally tweak your character to get good combinations of DPS, Healing and tanking.  You can even have full builds prepared so you can quickly switch from tank form to DPS monkey.

Another nice addition is the "standard" builds.  If you don't know what you want to do, they have pre-approved named classes that automatically allocate points as you level.  So starting out can be pretty simple, because you can choose cleric "Steampunk" build and just start playing without doing much research.  Each class (warrior, cleric, rogue and mage) has 10-15 of each of these pre-packaged builds.

My feeling is that Rift tried to take the best features of the games so far.  They've even taken some of the experience sharing ideas from GW2.  By far, Rift is the most actively developed of any MMO that I know of.  Weekly events and new content all the time, and this has been happening since the original release.  So far it doesn't feel like they are just milking the cash cow now.

Maybe after I get my dissertation wrapped up, I'll give it another go.  I really did love the tree, and yeah, I used the build saving feature.  The standard build idea is certainly not something I was around for.  I can't remember which one I had anymore, but either the chloro or the rogue had a fun tanking build (I think chloro tank did, worked through mitigation), and I enjoyed the DPS build of my mage.  AOE dmg like mad.  :)  That part was fun.  I just really wished I had gotten into a fun guild or something because the instances I was in was just ridiculously full of trash talk.  :/

We have enough players in our guild to run 20-man raids without opening it up to noobs.  So you get used to playing with the other peeps.  Rift raids are so hard though, so it takes practice and coordination.

I still play it occasionally.  Actually I'm back to it with the latest expansion.  It scratches my itch for questing/leveling style of play.  I kinda like the PvP also, but haven't done it much with the latest expansion.  I hear they changed it somewhat and don't really know what the general feelings are about the changes.  I also started WoW back up, but after playing Rift I just can't really get into it.  WoW is just scratching my nostalgic itch - nothing more to see there.  :)

I seriously would like to try and do the raids, but they are so complex and I just don't have the skills to help out those who have been memorizing the mechanics to be of any use other than cannon fodder.

Look for a weak target and attack it.   hehe   PvP now is mosty down in VvV town..   Still get the few that check the champs what is time consuming. for a 2 min raid  :))

Yea I'm with ya TM, so far rift's mechanics are so complex I feel like I'm just treading water. Inching towards level 20 and doing rifts with strangers out there. We'll see if I can get the hang of it!

I tried this game twice on free trial - I never could get into it.

Infact for MMOs the only ones I enjoyed less were japanese.
