General UO Chat / Sometimes, you die a little bit inside...but then...

(This is not it, but I will find it!)

General UO Chat / The new killer warfork
« on: February 11, 2013, 07:27:19 PM »
I feel this warfork will be important in the next round of changes.  It really needs a hit spell or splintering weapon, but this sort of weapon will wreck people.

This is an emergency, people.  If you haven't played with the new changes on test center...STOP EVERYTHING you are doing in UO right now.

1.  Copy your favorite Sampire
2.  Go fight some pretty modest spawn
3.  Watch yourself die.  And die.  And die again.
Repeat for ANY melee character with high dexterity.
Now, repeat for ranged characters.

This change is going to destroy EVERY non-mage, non-tamer, non-bard template.  You like soloing anything in this game?  Forget it.  You have an...ARMY...of characters?  Won't matter anymore.

If you experience the same things I just did, please go to the below website and post up some feedback.  I recommend you go to stratics, cut/paste some of the more detailed posts, and submit that.

I am not one to say the sky is falling.  But, folks, it is.  It is.

Computer Rigs / Considering an ultra-book
« on: January 07, 2013, 11:37:28 AM »
First, here's the system I'm considering:  http://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/dell-updates-xps-13-with-1080p-display/

I used to build my own desktop rigs.  Then, I decided I wanted a laptop that could also handle heavy gaming and bought a tricked out XPS laptop back in 2007.  It still runs everything just fine today, including Starcraft II, but the graphic card is notorious for getting hot and melting solders.  The system is pretty old and wieghs a metric ton...so...maybe time for a new one.

These days, I don't follow anything about computer components and wouldn't have the time to get smart on all the tech options out there.  That means buying off-the-shelf again.

Anyone know anything about ultrabooks?  Mostly, can I run UO on them and possible VMware?  I'm not looking to spend too much and I don't want a desktop rig.

General UO Chat / cLAW: Long delays and eventual crashes?
« on: January 02, 2013, 06:54:23 AM »
Greetings!

I've been running cLAW along with a modified version of Cerv's Honor-and-Attack all weekend.  I've been restarting cLAW every two hours or so because it starts getting very slow and will eventually trigger either a client crash (because H-a-A moves while cLAW is being pokey with dragging) or an EUO crash.

Details:
- Vista, 32-bit on a laptop that was new in 2007
- Running both cLAW and H-a-A in the same EUO instance
- No other clients/instances running

Anyone else experience sometime similar?

Thanks!

General UO Chat / Ever come across an item and go, "Huh?"
« on: December 07, 2012, 06:09:25 PM »
So...what is up with this staff?  Pretty interesting, undoubtedly useless.  Still, very nicely themed weapon.

Sometimes, the loot system is just elegant.  Pity it is lacking a spiffy "Arcane Stick of Thumping" moniker.

General UO Chat / THIS is just so heartbreaking...

It is too soon to discuss.  I'm too emotional.  I'll just put up a screen shot.

General UO Chat / Why artifacts don't matter for PvM anymore...
« on: November 04, 2012, 12:04:49 AM »
Lesser.  LESSER?!

It is getting to the point where I have 30% SSI on all my suits before you even factor in the weapon itself or my stamina.

General UO Chat / Brief Dungeon Wrong Walk-thru
« on: October 21, 2012, 08:07:38 PM »
Greetings -

I decided to try out the revamped Wrong.  Bottom line:  Don't waste your time.  If you must, this is what you need:

- Stealth Thief w/Magery
- A dozen or so lockpicks
- A batch of brightly died bandies

The thief part is theoretical.  You *must* have lockpicking, but I have yet to run across the new stealables.

In each of the cells, you will find a bunch of bedrolls.  You have to double click each one.  If you're lucky, you'll find a hole underneath it.  Most likely, you'll get hit with a trap.  Most are just annoying.  A couple insta-kill you.

Oh, and every time you click a bedroll, you pop out of hiding.  The monsters that live down here are no joke.  Sometimes, for no discernible reason, one might insta-kill you.  Also there are a couple of floor tiles that insta-kill you.  This place is a hoot.

Eventually, you find a hole that takes you to the demonic jailer.  Let him hit you.  He teleports you to a jail (no, not that jail).  THIS place is fairly easy.  Stealth around until you find both the exit and the treasure room.  Once you know the route, drop a trail of brightly colored bandies so you can run back quickly when you need to.

In the treasure room, pick all the chests, then click through the various traps.  There are usually three or four per chest.  Inside the chest are a bunch of 'hot' items.  You cannot be hidden while you hold them.

Sift through all the chests.  You're looking for "Assassin Honed' weapons, which can't be obtained anywhere else.  They are fairly crappy, but hey - collectable pixels!

Once you know what you're going to grab, mount your ethy (you DID bring an ethy, right?), grab all the stuff you want and run hell bent for leather to the exit.  If any of the jailers hit you, you pop back into jail, without your loot.  There is also a chance that the maze you just plotted your way through will have changed.

Also, the ONE time I found an assassin-honed weapon, I accidentally ran into the sparkles in one hallway (oh yeah - don't do that) and ended up back in jail.  The loot was BACK in the chests...which were locked again...and I had to go through the whole stupid thing again...only to find that the 'Assassin Honed' property had been replaced with something else.

Honestly, go script mine instead.  This place is worthless.

UO-Related Tutorials / Despise Dungeon Revamp
« on: September 02, 2012, 08:00:51 AM »
If you're looking for tremendous excitement and challenge, look elsewhere.  If, however, you want a fairly low-stress chance at the new Despise artifacts then you've come to the right place.

Walkthru:

A) Go read uoguide's Despise page.  Seriously.
B) Get two friends or two additional accounts.  Have stealth.  Have magery and a ton of MR.
C) Go to the evil side of Despise.  Grab yourself at least three different monsters, one on each account.  I recommend:  Darkmane, Echinite and Phantom for the discord.
D) While still on the evil side, start letting your new friend kill other evil stuff.  You need to avoid other players until your fresh tame turns blue from the karma increase.  Most people aren't smart enough yet to know that you can keep your pet from attacking someone else's grey fresh tame with the wisp control token.
E) When your tame reaches about level 9, you ought to be able to park your pet in one spawn spot and just ignore it until it hits the max level of 15.  Go work on the other two tames while you wait.
F) Park your level 15 pet on the good side while you wait, just in case something remarkably bad happens while you're not paying attention.
G) When all three pets are level 15, use the wisp orb context menu to conscript them.
**Important:  Make certain that you've conscripted all the pets.  I'd say do it twice, just in case.
**Equally important:  Do not conscript your pets until you can do all three at once.  You've been warned.
H) Stealth your way to the center island, killing the level 8s and 9s you encounter.  No sweat.
**IMPORTANT:  Do not bother with killing the wisp.  Time your approach so you get the actual boss.  The wisp just respawns when you kill it.
I) Stealth your Echinite toward the middle of the island first.  He is your tank.
J) Bring the other two up to join the battle.  Once you've confirmed that the Bad Guy and his little wisp friend are beating on your wolf, run the below snippet on each of three characters:

Stolen from EN:
Code: [Select]
set %heal_spell 28
set %heal_who [INSERT ID HERE]
set %cast_delay 60
Main:
gosub castit 15 %heal_spell %heal_who %cast_delay
wait 60
goto Main:
;-------------------------------------
; %1 = Event Macro Param 1
; %2 = Event Macro Param 2
; %3 = Target ID or NONE
; %4 = Spell Delay
sub castit
  if %3 = NONE
  {
    event macro %1 %2
    set %fcr ( #sCnt2 + %4 )
    return
  }
  finditem %3 G_8
  if #findkind = -1
    return
  set #ltargetID %3
  set #ltargetKind 1
  event macro %1 %2
  target
  event macro 22 0
  set %fcr ( #sCnt2 + %4 )
return

K) Loot.

I haven't had a chance to do this more than once yet.  I used Darkmane, Echinite and Naba.  The Naba is the spellcaster, and seemed to always be out of mana.  I'd really recommend either the discording Phantom or the healing Promethiod.  I was never able to get a Promethiod high enough - they die a lot - so I went with a convenient Naba instead.

No artifacts, but a pile of non-cursed new loot system Artifacts to sort through.  Many were cursed, but a number were not.  No idea if luck played a role, but I had only 100.  Next time, I'll try it with luck.

Let me know if you have questions.

Enjoy!

EDITS:  Between J) and K), you'll need a book.
When I say "a ton of MR" I mean: "A character that can cast one GHeal every 6 seconds without ever running out of mana."  Very easy to do.

Off Topic / DropBox question
« on: August 12, 2012, 06:28:23 AM »
Anyone out there use Dropbox regularly?  I've just started.  As part of an attempt to get more storage, I invited a bunch of dummy accounts I use for various things.  I logged in and accepted the invitations, then built dropbox accounts for those 'users'...but still no storage increase.  It's been about 12 hours.

What am I missing?

I don't care what you say, weapons like this should never have been put in the game.

(Not going to stop me from using them, though!  Nom nom nom)

Off Topic / Thinking about a new laptop...bring me up to speed?
« on: June 06, 2012, 08:28:10 AM »
Probably in the next year or so, I'll be looking to replace my monster Dell XPS gamining laptop with another laptop.  I'm way behind in what there is to know, so I have a few questions and I'm looking for your expertise in those and other areas!

Intent:
- UO and VMWare
- Modest PC gaming.  I'd like to play things like Starcraft II or the latest iteration of Warhammer 40K in 2013 and beyond.  I do not FPS.
- Archiving Movies.  Ahem.
- Archiving Audiobooks.  Also ahem.
- Not a Mac convert yet, sorry.

Goals:
- Lightning fast boot-up times.  Should I go SSD?  I hear bad things about maintenance and lifespan...
- Reliable DVD or BD drive.  I burn a *lot* of movies and I've replaced my optical drive on this 2007 laptop twice because I wore it out.
- Potentially act as a media server to my TV, but that's sort of tentative

What can you recommend/educate me on?

Thanks!

Off Topic / Caption Contest!
« on: June 04, 2012, 09:50:08 AM »
Ok, so the winner of this contest may or may not receive anything at all.

Anyone with a modicum of internet literacy and passing familiarity with current events should be able to identify this picture.  That's not the point.  The point is that the photo is perfect for a caption contest.

I determine the winner.  You'll get more credit for being creative than raunchy (I'm looking at you, manwinc).

Ready...set...GO!

General UO Chat / Calling Ultima: Time to Solve Cora!
« on: June 03, 2012, 12:13:28 PM »
Alright, my friend...you've soloed just about everything in the game.  Time to put on your thinking cap for Cora!

I think a passel of stealth Mystics could do it, with a character standing by to rez.  I had no trouble staying alive with just one of these templates down there...although I didn't do much damage.  A single RC was able to eat away a tiny portion of her health bar.

Accept the challenge!
