I know this is supposed to be a short post of our list of Top 5 Movies, but I've proven I'm a long-winded poster, haven't I? I just can't think of what my "Top 5 Movies" are. For me, it's like an impossible task to name the top 5 movies because I love so many, I've seen so many, I've owned so many (and in so many different formats: Film, VHS, Betamax, LaserDisc, VCD, DVD, Blu-ray and now any number of different digital files). But even if I were to break it down into categories like Action, Drama, Mystery, Thriller, SciFi, Comedy, etc I still don't know what I'd name.
So, let's say for instance, we start with my top 5 favorite Science Fiction movies as of this writing:
The Matrix
Serenity
Fifth Element
Donnie Darko
Star Trek
However that's my list of Top 5 SciFi movies right now in 2009. But if you asked me the same question 15 years ago in 1994 my list may have been:
Terminator 2: Judgment Day
Back To The Future
Blade Runner
Aliens
The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai
Now let's double the years back... had you asked me 30 years ago in 1979, you'd probably hear a list more like:
Close Encounters of The Third Kind
Star Wars
Planet Of The Apes
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
Logan's Run
Had you asked me when finishing up high school in 1956 and my list may have been roughly:
20,000 Leagues Under The Sea
Creature From The Black Lagoon
War Of The Worlds
Forbidden Planet
The Day The Earth Stood Still
So to take all those experiences over all those years watching all those movies and to try to name my Top 5 SciFi movies is a hard task, let alone my Top 5 Movies. But not using categories, not worrying about what year it was made and not considering anything other than "I simply love that movie" and I need to name my top 5 movies right now...
Raiders Of The Lost Ark
Lord Of The Rings (I consider all three of the "Extended Editions" together to be one single 14 hour movie)
In Bruges
Brazil
Serenity or Fifth Element (I can not figure out which I like more, so they both go on the list - tied)
So... after considering that top 5 list for only a moment or two, I can't help but feel odd not including: Seven Samurai, The Usual Suspects, Citizen Kane, Sin City, The Good, The Bad & The Ugly, Goodfellas, The Sixth Sense, Psycho, Jaws, Full Metal Jacket, To Kill A Mockingbird, Monty Python And The Holy Grail, The Shining, On The Waterfront, The Wild Bunch, Scream, Pulp Fiction, North By Northwest, The Godfather, V For Vendetta, The Princess Bride, Trainspotting, Chinatown, Pitch Black, Casablanca, Singin' In The Rain, Rocky, Midnight Run, Batman, Donnie Darko, Running Scared...
