Just curious what everyone does as a career, and if it's the field they chose, or one they ended up in growing to love/hate it?
I personally am a heavy equipment mechanic specializing in gravel trucks and associated equipment. I also do a ton of welding and fabrication.
After hours we do fun projects and restorations.
I love my career, and that's the reason I can work 90+ hours a week, as I have for the last 4 years.

I'm not very good at disecting code, but I can pull one of these apart and clock it and rebuild it in about half the required time:

I have huge respect for any white collar worker that can work inside in a small building. I feel cramped in a 10,000 sq ft shop, with the doors open on both ends - haha.
I'm stuck being a blue collar forever, due to piercings, tattoos, clothing choices, and hair style.
-
Hehe.
Well, I'll tell ya - I have tattoos, piercings, and hair down to my collar (much shorter than it used to be but still WAY off the norm here). I'm also certified in arc, mig, and plasma arc from my previous life laying down valve seals for pipelines, etc. I did a few stints in some regional hardcore and metal bands as well, one that almost got signed before the drummer went off the deep end and saved us. Somehow I made it through 5 years working in long-term care taking care of people both before and after they died. By then I had somehow managed to squeeze out a degree with a triple major, one of which was computer science (I was 26 at this point).
Not sure how I ended up here but the 18-year old version of me would have kicked my ass; of course he was kind of wasted most of the time and I'm a little tougher now than I was then so he wouldn't be able to but...well...you get the point.
I'm with you on the cramped though, the only thing keeping me going here is the pay and I have a window seat with an awesome view of the Adirondacks. I work with some really cool people too so that helps a lot!

Yeah I'm sititng at 36 piercings, and most of my tattoos are visible - hands, neck, sleeved legs and arms, etc, and a foot high mohawk. Even some of the auto shops have problems with guys looking like me working for them hehe.
-
Well you definitely have me beat!
It's tought to have style isn't it? ;)
-
Haha, yeah. :D
-
Guess only you and me have jobs. ;)

thats a great pic. rofl.
but yeah....I still sit at a desk with 3 monitors, a wyse thin terminal, and usually at least one forklift mountable pc. I manage a 11TB SAN with a handful of ESX hosts. I've got a major boner for the new vSphere 4 stuff VMware just announced this week. Dynamic dirstributed switching is fuckin crazy. I love it. SQL server is my friend, it keeps me company. I drink coffee from a very nice Kuerig.
I love what I do, and yes I work for a company that hasn't asked for bailout monies. we are still doing very well thank you very much :D
They take good care of me, and I take good care of thier systems : ;D

Did a stint in the army for nine years. Managed to get out with a nursing degree. Work on a orthopedic floor now in a mid size hospital. Been doing alot of mma training lately, to old to fight but love training. Have recently helped a fighter train for the iska world championship belt. Would like to switch over to that if I could make some money doing it. Going back to school for PA-C or NPC, again, to old to go full blown MD. Who knows where that will lead to. ;)
