Title: Soul Gem? What for?

Managed to get one of these a while back from the Prim. Lich spawn.  Double clicking it brings up a targeting gump and "Who do you want to throw this at?"

What happens if I throw it at, say, Twinkle McNugget?  Besides the subsequent beatdown, I mean...

From what I've tried, ...nothing.  But from what I've read, you can cast a spell and target the gem. The gem hold that spell until you d-click it. Once you do, target an enemy.
