I knew Carl when he was at Cornell (before he died) about 1979 or 80 and I was teaching at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). He gave me a ride in his red Porsche convertible. All of his fellow faculty members hated his guts (but respected his intellect). We talked about what would happen in a nuclear war which he believed would cause a "nuclear winter" and kill all life on the planet. This was long before he published his papers and books on the subject. I was doing acid rain research and he was interested in learning all he could about atmospheric chemistry. I was a young assistant professor and was flattered by his attention. I was sadden to hear of his death.

and that was probably more than you all wanted to know about him!

I do not know about that. I gained a little more knowledge about you gimlet and alot more respect :)
