Rockband Question

My buddy is getting it for his kids, does he need all the attachments? Can he just add them as he goes along?

He says he has a guitar now, I imagine it's for a previous version of Rockband, will it work if he gets the latest?

I add them as I go along.  Started with guitars.  Added microphone.  Still don't have drums.  I only play guitar.  ;)

I take it this is for the 360? I don't believe buying Drums solo is out for the Wii yet.
