In the late 90's, I moved from the crazy, fun, single life in St. Thomas, U.S.V.I. to the cold, long winter, far from anything, married with children state of Maine.
The wife and I worked opposing shifts as much as possible to keep the cost of daycare down.
I purchased my first (prebuilt piece of junk) computer at this time just to stay connected to the world.
Soon after, I found Ultima Online. Full of every kind of person you could think of. From the straight shooters up to those who just wanted to see this virtual world burn (or crash).
Play times for me in the beginning were limited to the quiet, unpredictable naptimes of my children.
The addiction of gaming, The skill building, The tedious farming, and the need for the interaction of people increased beyond the borders of the allotted real world playtime rapidly.
I needed more time to socialize in game. More time to figure out weird glitches. More time to learn how to become a surviving "blue" and eventually, a ruling "red".
Trammel wasn't always a thing.
So, in the beginning scripts helped free up in game time. Drastically lessen the click, point, drag, clicks which could drive one crazy.
Starting with simple prebuilt gaming assists like UO Rudder, Ghost Mouse, UO Curse, UO Assist. Then, as my in game needs increased, started to dabble in the more complex forms of gaming assisting.
Found a tight group of scripters in game and together, we would work out the craziest things. Leveling ground with in game items was almost a full time job back in the housing boom.
Made friends with a clammer in Maine.... he would bring his whole cumbersome computer set up over the house on long weekends when we were doing some of the fun, drawn out yet highly rewards things.
Kids are grown now, There's more quiet times. And I'm back.
